John Angus Obituary

John was a scientist and educator. Born in Grand Haven Michigan in 1934, the eldest son of Francis and Margaret (Cotton) Angus, he had many childhood adventures with his brother Charles and varied employment experiences all before graduating from Grand Haven High School in 1951. He attended the University of Michigan, where by 1960 he had earned a Bachelor's, Master's and PhD in Chemical Engineering. In 1960 he married Caroline Gezon, and they began their life together in St. Paul Minnesota where John worked for the 3M Company on thermoelectric materials. In 1963 he joined the Chemical Engineering faculty of Case Institute of Technology, now Case Western Reserve University. John and Caroline raised their two children, Lorraine and Charles in Cleveland. The family was fortunate to spend sabbatical years when John was a visiting professor at the University of Edinburgh and Northwestern University. John's major research interests included metastable diamond synthesis, bulk growth of group III nitrides, applied thermodynamics, and electrochemical charge transfer to semiconductors. In 1968 John published the first paper on the low-pressure growth of diamond, having been the first person to indisputably do so. He subsequently pioneered the development of a new type of carbon hard films, used today as protective coatings for items such as hard drives and sunglasses. At the University, John was active in educational reform and worked to expand opportunities for women in Engineering. He served as Interim Dean of Engineering from 1986-1987. His many professional acknowledgements include being elected to the National Academy of Engineering and being a Fellow of both the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Electrochemical Society. He was a recipient of the Pioneer Award from the Electrochemical Society, an honorary ScD from Ohio University, an inductee to the Grand Haven High School Hall of Fame and the recipient of the CWRU Hovorka Prize for exceptional achievements in teaching, research, and scholarly service. John continued to pursue research interests in retirement, publishing his final paper on electrostatic charging at 87. In addition to his academic achievements John was deeply involved with the Ohio Scottish Games, including serving as its Chairman for several years. John was preceded in death by his parents and wife Caroline. He is survived by his brother Charles (wife Laurel), children Lorraine and Charles (wife Shannon), grandchildren Rebecca and Theodore Hubish, and former son-in-law Sam Hubish. He also leaves behind sister-in-law Cindy Laux (Dave), brothers-in-law Donald Gezon (Patricia) and Bill Gezon (Kathy), beloved nieces and nephews as well as a host of wonderful friends, colleagues and students. His family would like to thank the staff at Judson Park, Judson Manor, and Judson Homecare for providing loving and attentive care during his final years. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, March 4 at Judson Manor, 1890 E. 107th St, Cleveland OH 44106. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring John with a contribution to the Scottish American Cultural Society of Ohio, Inc (SACSO) c/o Pam Kilpatrick, Treasurer, 2750 Jameston Dr., Rocky River OH 44116. John Angus and I both served on the Case Institute of Technology Chemical Engineering Department Development Committee for many years (and enjoyed getting together for a yearly Martinee after the meetings). I loved hearing about his many accomplishments in his laboratory and his adventures in his world travels to present his fascinating work. He was a good friend!

Dr. Angus was my favorite professor while I was at CWRU. I started working with him as a Freshman on a research project and he was my research advisor through my masters degree. I had the privilege to be a TA for him and he indulged my quirkiness , allowing me to award "cats paws" like gold starts to the best homework assignments.

I kept up with him for many years and valued his insights, both professionally and personal. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Angus Family, please accept my deep condolences. I am truly sorry for your loss. Dr. Angus easy manner and love of life endeared him to the whole CWRU academic family, one of whom was myself during the early 1970s. He and his family generously offered me, newly married graduate student, usage of his house and care for Love Beads, Scottish Terrier dog during Edinboro sabbatical year. I shall never forget his support and willingness to help. John will be truly missed by all who knew him and by broader academic community for his knowledge of diamond and diamond like films formation via chemical vapor deposition.
We all remember him fondly.

Dr Angus was one of my favorite professors. He sent me to Scotland with two classmates in the late 70s as exchange students at the University of Edinboro. It was a great opportunity and as promised I wrote him at least once a month to let him know what we doing. After I graduated and moved away and then back to Cleveland we'd run into him and his wife and laugh about adventures. And when he retired he gave me an envelope with all my letters to him from Scotland. He and his wife were such special people!
Please accept our sincere condolences.

Sending my deepest condolences to the entire Angus family. John was a sweet giant among the CWRU faculty, and his influence was thru his soft but forceful advice and counsel. From the moment I was first introduce to John in the early 1970's, we connected. My thanks for being a guiding light for me for my early years at CWRU. Having known him was a gift and he will be missed.

Dr. Angus was a pioneer in the area of diamond research. We have met several times in scientific meetings and in our institute, NIRIM in Tsukuba, Japan. In 1990, he invited me to a symposium which he held in Ohio. He was not only an excellent scientist but also a warm-hearted man.
With many thanks and deep sorrow,

Sending our deepest condolences to the entire Angus family. John was truly a remarkable man. Although our interactions were brief, it was evident how much love he had for his family. We are grateful for the time we spent in Michigan at his beloved lake house during the wedding week of Chuck and Shannon. May his memory be a blessing to you all.

To the family of Dr. Angus: It was a honor and privilege to have been a part of the care team for your dad. You were steadfast in his care and present daily while at Judson Park HCC. I am so happy that I worked directly in his care. An amazing man, I will always remember his smile, always pleasant no matter what. Thanks for sharing and find comfort in the memories you have of him. I got to know you guys before retiring from nursing and it was a true pleasure. God Bless you both. Sincerely: Emma Evening Nurse @ JP HCC

Dr. Angus was my advisor, mentor and friend at Case where I was a masters student and researcher in the late 1970's. His passion and unwavering dedication to science and family certainly set a lifelong example for me and, I am sure, all of the students Dr. Angus had at Case. My sincere condolences to the Angus family.

I was very sad to hear about Dr. Angus. I was a secretary in the Chem Eng Department right out of high school - from July 1974 to Nov 1978 - I kind of grew up there. It was a wonderful place to work, and I remember Dr. Angus very well. He will definitely be missed.

Dr. Angus was a great educator and mentor and inspired and guided my career in Chemical Engineering. I had him for more of my ChemE classes than any other professor at Case. He was my advisor for my Master's Degree. I always said his classes were hard and fair, but you knew when you finished you learned what you needed to know. He will be truly missed.
