John L. Atkinson

John L. Atkinson of Sterling Heights passed away on Sunday, June 4, 2023 at the age of 77.
John was born on April 20, 1946 in Highland Park, Michigan. He was the son of LaVerne "Lee" Atkinson and Mary Ann (Servansky) Atkinson. John was a 1963 graduate of Highland Park High School. He was a proud United States Air Force Veteran serving during the Vietnam War. On July 25, 1987, he married Marcy Theut at Burning Tree Country Club. John finished out his working career in 2008 when he retired from Crittenton Hospital in Rochester, Michigan. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154. John had a creative mind and anything he envisioned he could build, fix or enhance. He enjoyed refurbishing antique radios and made beautiful flower gardens at their home. John never missed an opportunity to hit the fairways; fished on occasion; and took pride in his comic book collection. He was a great friend and doting husband. John will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
John is survived by his wife, Marcy; nephews, Dave (Kathy) Peach and Nicholas Atkinson; niece, Rachel Philips; special cousin and friend, Fred Pratt; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary Annette Lang, James (Jean) Theut, Jeanne Curtis, Eileen Theut, William (Linda) Theut, Helen Frazier, Agnes (Steve) Flynn, Paul (Beverly) Theut, Mary Theut, Vicki Theut and Sharon Theut; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Mary Atkinson; siblings, Cora (Dave) Peach, Ronald Atkinson and twin sister Joann; Father-in-law and Mother-in-law, Leo and Madeline Theut and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charles Theut, Leo "Pat" Theut, Francis Theut, Kathleen Pipe, Joyce Theut, William Lang, James Curtis, Donald Pipe and Raymond Frazier.
Visitation for John will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Scripture Service on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at Hauss-Modetz Funeral Home, 47477 Romeo Plank, Macomb. The Mass for John will be held at 10:00 a.m. with an instate time of 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 12, 2023 at St. Paul of Tarsus Church, 41300 Romeo Plank, Clinton Township. John will be laid to rest with military honors immediately following the funeral mass at Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Township.
