John was an enthusiastic jogger for over 40 years, meeting his running buddies at the Providence Downtown YMCA and running around the City of Providence in the morning. He would often be seen by fellow attorneys who would observe how adept he was at dodging RIPTA buses. John enjoyed running in road races, and he would often step in to teach the YMCA calisthenics class when the teacher was out. One of his greatest running accomplishments was completing a half marathon up Pike's Peak. He also enjoyed playing softball in an attorney's softball league. John loved skiing with his wife and children, siblings, nieces and nephews.
He and his wife were world travelers, enjoying learning about different cultures and always bringing back souvenirs for his children and grandchildren. He had an opportunity to learn more about the U.S. Customs Service after one memorable trip to Ireland when he brought back 13 Irish knit sweaters. He is famously known for kissing the Blarney Stone and exclaiming, "Mama Mia"! John took great pride in his vegetable garden and planted hundreds of flowers annually in his yard under the watchful guidance and direction of his wife, Kay. John laid hundreds of yards of mulch in those same gardens through the years. John often proclaimed himself to being an honorary Irishman by marriage and he enjoyed listening to Irish music with his beloved Irish wife, Kay.
