John Barnard Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brooks & White Funeral Home and Crematory - Roxboro on Jan. 2, 2026.
John Wharton Barnard of 199 Telluride Trail in Garner, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, John was the son of the late Dr. John W. Barnard and June Wharton Barnard. He had a deep appreciation for people and other qualities that would define his life both personally and professionally.
John began his career in the 1970s with IBM, working in manufacturing and then moving onto computer programming. His aptitude for systems and his thoughtful approach to problem-solving led him to a fulfilling role with the Duke University Alumni Association, where he continued his work in information technology until retirement. Never one to sit still for long, John later joined Brooks & White Funeral Home part-time. There, his easygoing demeanor made him a comforting presence to many.
A devoted husband and father, John is survived by his beloved wife Charlotte Russell Barnard and their daughter Jennifer Barnard. He also leaves behind his brother Calvin and sisters Anne Sloane and Jean Bell, sister in law Bonnie Rogers, and many nieces and nephews who adored him.
John and Charlotte met in high school at South Granville High School in Creedmoor, North Carolina. This was the start of a lifelong partnership filled with love, laughter, and shared adventures-including countless trips with friends and games of bridge played side by side. Together they formed an exceptional team at the card table as well as in life. John achieved Bronze Life Master status with the American Contract Bridge League-a testament to both his strategic mind and enduring enthusiasm for the game. After moving to Garner, North Carolina earlier in 2025, he joined a neighborhood Monday evening poker group. True to form, he often returned home with more nickels than he brought.
John's witty personality left an impression on everyone he met. Whether through professional endeavors or casual conversations over cards, he built lasting connections rooted in kindness and authenticity.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on January 3, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Brooks & White Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately after the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Cross Training Ministry, attn: Jadee Gilley, 285 Taylor Road, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041.
