John Barr Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Burns Funeral Home of Perry on Jan. 4, 2026.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Eugene Barr, a beloved husband, father, and friend, who left us peacefully on January 4, 2026, at the age of 75. Born on November 12, 1950, in Muncie, Indiana, John lived a life full of adventure and joy, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
John was a proud technology director in public education, dedicating his career to shaping the future of countless students. He held a Bachelor's Degree and was known for his commitment to advancing technology in the classroom. Beyond his professional life, John had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, especially in geology, which he pursued with enthusiasm and passion.
An adventurer at heart, John loved nothing more than off-roading in his Jeep and camping, where he created countless memories with family and friends exploring the great outdoors. His love for the rugged landscape and open spaces was matched only by his interest in HAM radio, where he connected with people from all walks of life.

John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Martha Barr; and one granddaughter.

John is survived by his loving wife, Melinda Barr; their children, Erin Branam (Jimmie), Jen Starms (Brad), and Colin Barr (Diana); their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John was a devoted family man, always prioritizing time spent with his loved ones.
His spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and he will forever be remembered for his kindness, intellect, and adventurous spirit.

Mel & Jen, it is with great fondness & respect that I look back at the time I spent with John at Cahokia High School. What an amazingly talented and kind man he was! He was an inspiration to many at CHS. In my administrative role, it took me no time at all to realize how fortunate both the high school and the district were to have him among us. He was an asset to students and staff, but more importantly, he was a really cool and special person. Please know that John and you are a part of our daily prayers. Rich & Carolyn Buxton

To: Mel and Jen
From: Mark St Ivany

Just wanted to convey my sympathy and sorrow to both of you for John's passing. I look fondly on those days when all of us were trying to make a difference in bringing technology and information to the students and staff of the Cahokia School District. A lot of people contributed to that success, however, John was the "Keystone". His expertise and willingness to think outside the box was the driving force in making technology and access a reality.
He was patient, and always there to give guidance and knowledge to those with less technological experience. But moreover, "he was just a really good guy". What a great way to be remembered.
Mark
