John Conrad Battles, age 71, of Canton, IL passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025, with his loving wife, Stephanie, at his side. John was born on July 29, 1953, in Cairo, Illinois, to Ruby Battles and Frank Tapley, both of whom preceded him in death.
John held a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life, finding solace and fulfillment in the outdoors-whether mowing, hunting, fishing, or practicing archery. Beyond all hobbies, John was a dedicated and loving pet owner. His previous and current dogs: Eboni, Precious, Bailey, Nylah, and Oakley all provided him with a great sense of purpose and love.
John's career was marked by a lifelong commitment to public service. He began his journey at Southern Illinois University before dedicating nearly three decades to the Illinois Department of Corrections. He retired in 2003, after ultimately attaining the position of Warden at the Illinois River Correctional Center.
A beloved Pepaw and Grandpa, John leaves behind his 15 grandchildren, who were the apple of his eye. He is survived by the love of his life of 40 years, Stephanie Battles; his three sons: Derek Battles, William Weinman (Dawn), and Brandon Battles (Danielle); and his sister, Rose Hightower. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson: Pe'Chince Conrad Battles; and siblings: Hope Hayes, James Battle, William Battle, and Earl Dean Bondurant.
In keeping with John's wishes, cremation has been accorded with no services to be held. In his selflessness, John fulfilled his status as an organ donor which has blessed others with a new version of life. Those who knew him are invited to honor his memory through quiet reflection or by donating to the Humane Society of Fulton County Illinois. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him.

So sorry to hear about John´s passing. I regret that we did not keep in touch. He was the best boss and things were never the same at the work release center after he left to go to Illinois River.
