John Bax Obituary

JOHN BAX John Bax, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, at his home in West Branch, Michigan. He was born on January 28, 1930, in Goodland Township, Lapeer County, Michigan, to John and Anna (Yonkman) Bax. John's life was marked by dedication, hard work, and a deep commitment to his family and community. Growing up, John had a strong work ethic that would carry him throughout his life. He spent his early years living and working on a farm in Imlay City before embarking on a career path that would touch many lives. After beginning as a lineman at Michigan Telephone, he went on to proudlyserve in the United States Navy out of Norfolk, VA aboard the USS Midway. The majority of his career was spent at the Pontiac Motor Division of General Motorsas a journeyman, die maker, and process engineer. Later, John transferred to GM Truck and Bus and his skills and expertise led him to continue as a sheet metal process engineer and later to the die room general foreman. His career culminated in his work in the sheet metal prototype business at AB&B and Modern Prototype Engineering following his retirement from GM. However, John's passion extended beyond his professional life. For 27 wonderful years, he owned and operated Skate Place in West Branch, MI, a beloved venue that brought joy to many. His community spirit shone brightly through his involvement with Ogemaw Heights High School's Building Trade program, where he played an instrumental role in making the Humane Society a reality. He was a lifetime member of the Midway Veteran Museum and also a Jack Daniels Tennessee Squire. When John was in his 50's, he made around 10 bicycle trips on the DALMAC (Detroit to Mackinac) bike ride, pedaling across the bridge on the last day. He also walked the Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk from 1984 almost every year. His final walk was the year he celebrated his 80thbirthday. John's interests were as rich as his career. He found solace and joy in woodworking, where he showcased his creativity and generosity by designing and crafting beautiful pieces, often gifted to friends and family. One of his proudest achievements was winning a Gold Ribbon Best of Show at the Michigan State Fair for his intricately crafted lap dulcimer, a testament to his talent and dedication. In addition to his many accomplishments, John was a vibrant family man who treasured the moments spent with his loved ones. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Piskor, whom he married on December 14, 1984, in the US Virgin Islands. His son, Anthony (Kelly) Bax; his daughter, Ann Renee Ford (Justin); and the joy his grandchildrenRandy Bax, Stephanie (Justin) Thompson, and Timothy Baxbrought to his life. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Carter Bax, Ainsley Bax, Nora Thompson, Ella Thompson, and Owen Thompson. John is also survived by several nieces and nephews and their children. John is preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings: Anthony Bax, Frank Bax, Peter Bax, Doris Badour, and Jennie Esman, along with his aunts and uncles. The loss of these family ties weighed heavily on him, but he found comfort in the cherished memories they left behind. A heartfelt thank you is extended to all who cared for John during his brave struggle with Parkinson's disease, including family, friends, Compassus Hospice, Ogemaw County EMS, and additional dedicated caregiversTracy, Emily, Don, Nichole, Lisa, and Hollie.
