Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Joanne Hyssong Bennett; six children and their families: Judy (Tom) Henegar of
Knoxville, TN with children Andrew (Tracy) and Rebecca (Sam); Tom (Joanne) Bennett of
Myrtle Beach, SC with children Mary and Gina (Ben); Mary Pat (Bob) Kozdemba of

Frederick, MD, several nieces and nephews, and countless friends who were always more like family.
Born June 13, 1933, in
Elmira, NY, Jack was the son of William and Mary Bennett. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers William and Gordon Bennett. A graduate of Southside High School and St. Bonaventure University (Class of 1955), Jack began his remarkable 43-year career at Chemung Canal Trust Company immediately after college. Starting as a clerk in the auditing department, his dedication, integrity, and leadership propelled him through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as President and Chief Operating Officer in 1988, Chief Executive Officer in 1991, and Chairman of the Board in 1996. Jack was widely respected as a trusted advisor and a pillar of Elmira's banking community.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jack exemplified servant leadership. He gave generously of his time and talents, serving on boards for St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation, Chemung County Historical Society, Elmira City Club, and as Treasurer of the Community Foundation of Chemung County, as well as volunteering countless hours with the Chemung County Chamber of Commerce and United Way of the Southern Tier. His influence extended statewide through his involvement in banking and civic organizations, including the Independent Bankers Association of New York State.
In retirement, Jack embraced life fully, cherishing time with Joanne, his children, and grandchildren. He was an avid reader, especially of World War II history. A lifelong golf enthusiast, Jack found joy on the greens, often sharing playful competition with Joanne-always quick to admit her swing was smoother and her putts more precise. Their shared love for the game took them to many beautiful courses across the country and reflected the deep partnership and laughter that defined their 70 years together.
Jack's out-of-town children-Judy, Mary Pat, and Anne-extend their deepest gratitude and heartfelt thanks to his three local children, Eileen, Maureen, and Tom, for their extraordinary devotion as primary caregivers, ensuring Dad's final years were filled with comfort, dignity, and love. The family also wishes to express profound appreciation to Dr. John Rathbun and the staff at Executive Medical Court, SC House Calls-most especially Lauren Trent, NP, and nurse Emily-and the compassionate team at Amedisys Hospice for their exceptional care and support.
Jack's legacy is defined by unwavering integrity, steadfast determination, and a tireless work ethic, all deeply rooted in his life as a devout Catholic. A gifted orator with a sharp wit, he inspired others through both his words and his example. He will be remembered not only for his professional achievements, but for his warmth, humor, and vitality he brought to every relationship.
