John E. Berg, 63, dedicated and loving husband and father, died September 5th in Boston, peacefully surrounded by his family, following a brief illness.
Mr. Berg of Vero Beach, Florida, was born in Detroit and raised in Grosse Pointe Farms. He attended the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and received his undergraduate degree from The Catholic University of America. He earned a Juris Doctor from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1987.
He then married his college sweetheart and moved back to Grosse Pointe Farms where together they raised their three children.
A partner of Clark Hill, he was also a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the American Bar Association, and a fellow of the Litigation Council of America.
He was actively involved in St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church, as well as the Country Club of Detroit and the Detroit Athletic Club, where he served on the board of directors. His passion for athletics was evident in his love for squash, bowling, skiing, and golf, especially with the John's Island Club "Amigos."
John is survived by his wife Patricia (née McLaughlin), son Ross, and daughters Molly Mulligan (James) and Lindsey. He is also survived by his beloved mother Elizabeth Berg Jachman (John) and brothers Paul (Susan) and James (Jeffrey). He was predeceased by his father, Emil D. Berg. He will be deeply missed by his family and cherished friends.
Visitation will be held at 9:30 am on Friday, September 22nd at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church, 157 Lake Shore Drive, Grosse Pointe Farms. A Requiem Mass will follow promptly at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to scholarships at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School. Gifts may also be addressed to "U of D Jesuit Advancement Office, 8400 S. Cambridge Ave., Detroit, MI 48221."

My deepest condolences to your entire family. The 'Bergs' were always the fun guys everytime I would come to the DAC to play squash. Then I had the privilege of having John as a teacher of mine at U of D Law. Many good memories and he was for sure an excellent attorney, a great teacher, but more importantly, a good man. My thoughts are with your family. Rest in peace my friend.

John was a brilliant lawyer, wonderful mentor and friend. I am eternally thankful for all that I learned from John. He was the first person I would call with a question and to bounce ideas off. And he was always just a phone call away. John was truly a giant and will be deeply missed.

Patty and Family, John will be tremendously missed by his colleagues at Clark Hill. While devastated by his passing, we all count ourselves fortunate to have worked with John and enjoyed his intellect, wit, unique personality, and many contributions to the firm. I know that he will also be missed by fellow members of the DAC, which he selflessly and cheerfully assisted as a labor of love. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Ed & Colleen Hood
