John S. Bieback, 77, of Ellington, beloved husband of Lin A. (Lavigne)
Bieback, died peacefully on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at Yale New Haven
Hospital, surrounded by his family. John was born in Hartford, CT, on
December 22, 1946, son of the late John J. and Nellie (Kurciak) Bieback.
John grew up in East Hartford. He went to school at SS Cyril & Methodius
School in Hartford and was a graduate of A.I. Prince Technical High
School. After school John served our country with the U.S. Navy (USS
Albany) during the Vietnam War. He then attended Hartford State Technical
College and graduated with a degree in manufacturing engineering. He
met and married the love of his life, Lin Lavigne on October 23, 1971, and
together they lived in East Hartford, before moving to Ellington into a home
they built in 1976. John worked as an engineer at the Stanadyne Corp. in
Windsor. He discovered his true calling when he became a member of the
Ellington Volunteer Fire Department, rising to the rank of lieutenant. He left
Stanadyne, then applied to area departments and was hired as a firefighter
with the Town of Manchester Fire Department, where he served for 25
years and retired on April 18, 2008. He felt he had found the best job in the
world with his brothers and sisters in MFD. John attended horology school
after retirement where he learned to repair antique clocks. He had a
passion for antique cars and boating in Rhode Island. His engineering
background, creative mind and desire to help others resulted in two
patents; both related to increasing the safety and communication of
firefighters. In anticipation of retirement Lin and John formed a company to
manufacture and sell another of John's patents, Brakelighter, designed to
increase safety while driving antique and classic cars. John was a member
of the National Horological Society, AACA, Model A Ford Club of America,
MARC, CMARC, and was a lifetime member of the Westerly Yacht Club. A
kind, patient, loving and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and
friend to many he will be dearly missed. Along with his wife of over 52
years, Lin, he leaves his daughter, Allison L. Bieback of Walden, NY; his
son, Thomas J. Bieback of Ellington; his sister, Helen Sokolowski and her
husband Fred of East Hartford; his brothers-in-law and sister-in-law,
Charles Costa of Cromwell, and Al and Janice Lavigne of Claremore, OK;
his grandchildren whom he adored, Greyson, Benson, and Weston
Bieback; and his nephews, Greg Fronczek and his wife Heather of W.
Hartford, Bryan Lavigne and his wife Jodie of Claremore, OK, and Steven
Lavigne of Claremore, OK. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary
Fronczek, and Angie Costa. His family will receive friends for calling hours
on Friday, July 19, 2024, from 4-7 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral
Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A Mass of Christian Burial will
be celebrated on Saturday, July 20, 2024, 10 a.m., meeting directly at SS
Cyril & Methodius Church, 63 Popieluszko Court, Hartford, CT. Burial with
Military Honors will take place on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, 9 a.m., at the
Massachusetts State Veterans Cemetery, 1390 Main St., Agawam, MA. In
lieu of flowers please consider donating blood/platelets or giving your

Today I was truly saddened to read of the passing my childhood friend John, RACKY , as we affectionately called him . I labeled him that name due to his robust I brows that I saw so similar to a Racoon. Time , life and circumstances certainly alter friendships and unfortunately visits . My friend was always a shining light when we would meet up. So many laughs and comical episodes! But as I said we all seem to disappear with life´s situations. John will forever be in my thoughts, my wonderful young life memories . Years and years flowed through my mind upon reading about his life story and his passing. If one could stand and speak of a truly wonderful person, a unique persona and a smiling loving way I would speak of my friend John Racky Bieback. Iam certain there are many who share my feeling. He was a special guy and I hurt today for the loss of a friend and the rememberance of youth. I loved you John! I send my sadness and sympathy to Lynn, Alison and Tommy and a reminder that you had one hell of a father and friend and husband. Today will be a day of reflection, mortality combined with memorable episodes that will spark a bit of laughter. I feel honored to have had John in my life. Rest peacefully until we meet again RACKY ! You always lived on the honorable side of life. I wish I could have said goodbye. PAUL And Barbara Pellegatto
