John Borders Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 5, 2025.
John Ollie Borders, 93, a longtime resident of Somerset and Salvisa, Kentucky, passed away on August 28, 2025, at approximately 1:30 a.m. at Arbor North Senior Living Facility in Jackson, Michigan.

He was born on August 11, 1932, in Lebanon, Kentucky, the son of William Cleaver Borders and Mary Agnes Mattingly.

Mr. Borders honorably served five years in the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of sergeant. Following his military service, he embarked on a career that spanned several decades as a field engineer with Unisys Corporation and later with First Data Corporation, where he serviced business machines and smaller office computer systems.

Devoted to his Catholic faith, Mr. Borders was a retired deacon and also served as a minister of the Eucharist, dedicating himself to the spiritual life of his community.

Outside of his professional and church service, Mr. Borders enjoyed fishing, gardening, and beekeeping. He was skilled in woodworking, and the altar and pulpit he crafted are still in use at St. Mildred Catholic Church today.

He is survived by his former wife, Gayle Borders Weigel, mother of his children; and by his children, John Borders, Jr., Steve Borders, Jeffrey Borders, and Laura Davenport. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his second wife, Roberta Borders; his father, William Cleaver Borders (1980); and his mother, Mary Agnes Mattingly (1998).

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at St. Mildred Catholic Church in Somerset, Kentucky. Mr. Borders will be cremated, and his ashes will be placed at St. Augustine Catholic Church Cemetery in Lebanon, Kentucky. No visitation is scheduled.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Arbor North Senior Living Facility for the compassionate care they provided.
