John Brickley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brown & Hickey Funeral Home on Mar. 8, 2025.
John P. Brickley, Brigadier General (ret), United States Marine Corps, passed away peacefully and quietly in Arlington, MA, on the morning of Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2025. He is survived by his wife, Maureen (Mahoney) Brickley, son Paul and his wife Kelly of Arlington, VA; daughter Cara of Charlestown, MA; son Patrick and his wife Lonnie of North Reading, MA; grandchildren Anne, Caroline, Julia and Luke; and extended family and loved ones. John was born in Somerville, MA and raised there and Winchester, MA. He graduated from BC High in 1956 and from the College of the Holy Cross in 1961. His Marine Corps career includes a tour with 26th Marines at Khe Sanh, Vietnam, where he was injured and received the Bronze Star medal; as Commanding Officer, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines; as Commanding Officer, 8th Marine Regiment; and as Executive Assistant to the Commandant of the Marine Corps and to the Secretary of the Navy. Following his Marine Corps service, John served as the Director of the American Lung Association of New England; as a Continuing Education teacher at the University of South Tampa; on the organizing committee of the annual Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Golf Tournament in Tampa, FL; and as the President of the first Community Development District of Arbor Greene in Tampa, FL. John's character, integrity, and sense of humor were characteristic of his approach to overcoming adversity and his combat injuries. They were especially important to the development of a new passion, golf, which he maintained over 20 years in Tampa, FL. Funeral services are planned for 10:00 am on Saturday, March 15th at St Joseph Church, 130 Common Street Belmont, MA, followed by burial at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Belmont, MA. Relatives and friends are invited. Donations can be made in his memory to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation or Boston College High School.

I am saddened to learn of General Brickley's death. I was privileged to serve on the MCSF Tampa Bay committee with him. He and Maureen were such a wonderful couple. God Speed, Semper Fidelis!

My sincerest condolences to BGen. Brickley's family. He was a true and consummate professional -- the epitome of a Marine's Marine. I was honored to serve under him while at MCLB Barstow.

Semper Fi, sir. And may God continue to bless and keep your family.
