It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John Vincent 'Vince' Brinkman, who left this world on September 10, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on December 28, 1937, in Meppen, Illinois, he was the youngest of seven children born to John and Catherine (Baalman) Brinkman, who instilled in him the values of hard work, compassion, and community.

While attending Brussels High School, he met and fell in love with Jo Ann Narup. They married on April 26, 1958, and began their 67-year journey. Together, they built a family and a legacy filled with love and laughter. Vince was a devoted husband and father, and he is survived by Jo Ann and their children: Susan (Kevin) Snyders, Lynn (Joe) Buchheit, Joyce (Gaylen) Hively, Barb Brinkman, Dan (Dena) Brinkman, Shannon (Troy) Neal, and Sara Brinkman. His heart swelled with pride for his ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, who brought him endless joy.

Throughout his life, Vince was known for his remarkable cooking skills that delighted family and friends alike. He took delight in collecting recipes, grocery shopping, and cooking for his loved ones. His chicken and dumplings and oyster stew were the best in the country, and he made all the holidays special with his delicious meals. He was passionate about Illinois football and basketball and spent many hours watching the games. He didn't just sit on the sidelines, in his younger days, he played softball, racquetball, and golf. He also loved trout fishing and sharing the experience with everyone. He could play a wicked game of croquet and was a mastermind with fantasy football. Vince's mushroom and ginseng hunting skills were second to none. Vince had a kind heart and a loving nature. He truly was an 'I never met a stranger' type of man and was a great friend to many; always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need.

Vince's career began at General Motors, where he started on at the St. Louis plant and eventually retired from the Wentzville plant in 1990. However, retirement did not mean slowing down. He searched for new ventures with enthusiasm, becoming a blackjack dealer on the Alton Belle, a special education transport, and a teacher's aide. His commitment to community service was evident as he worked to bring water service to rural southern Calhoun County, touching countless lives along the way. Although he held many titles in his life, his favorite role was being a father and grandfather. He was always there for his family. He could move an entire apartment in one day, build furniture, handle school pickups, wipe tears, share his wisdom, and give amazing bear hugs.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and a past member of the Knights of Columbus. Early on, he shared his time and talents as a 4-H leader, and with the help of his wife, Jo Ann, started the first 4-H club in Meppen. His kindness and willingness to lend a hand will be remembered by many.

Visitation will be Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Gress, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Brussels. The funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Meppen, Illinois, on September 20, 2025, at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Joseph's Cemetery Fund.

Vince Brinkman was more than just a husband, father and grandfather; he was a source of strength and unconditional love. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His legacy of kindness, devotion, and service will continue to inspire his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
