John Harold Brown was born on May 9, 1949, in Nassau, Bahamas, the Western
District, Prospect Hospital, to the late Joseph Sonny Brown and the late Estelle M.
George Shockley. He departed this life on December 6, 2024, surrounded by his loving
family.
John graduated from Lakewood High School in 1967. He was a Pittsburgh, PA,
resident. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, PA, with a Batchelor of Arts
Degree, Liberal Arts, cum laude, in 1981. John received a Certificate of Computer
Applications from the School of Technology, Pittsburgh, PA, in 1987. He also received
many other certificates.
John enjoyed working for Community Transit, in Pittsburgh, PA, for 18 years. But
his true calling was the work he did for the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh,
Pittsburgh, PA, from 2006 until his retirement in 2017. He held many positions during his
years at the Urban League, such as GED Instructor, Academic Advisor, Soft Skills
Instructor, Teaching Assistant, and Food Bank Aide. John was a certified youth trainer
for Youth Works Jumpstart Success. He was a mentor for the Mentoring Partnership of
Southwestern Pennsylvania, an online instructor for Smart Futures Curriculum, and a
tutor for Upward Bound Students, at the University of Pittsburgh. John had teaching
experience with individuals from 17 to 64 years of age. He was 100% dedicated to
helping people achieve their highest educational goals.
He was predeceased by his father Joseph Brown, Mother Estelle Shockley,
stepfather Armand Shockley, and brothers Kenneth Brown and Melvin Brown. John
leaves to cherish his memory, his loving daughter Melissa Reeves of Lakewood, NJ; his
two sisters, Millicent Brown of Toms River, NJ, and Florine Wilson Lamb, of Halifax,
PA, married to Eugene; a granddaughter Sylvia Reeves of Toms River, NJ; his
greatgrandchildren, Arianna Pierce, DaKyla Jones, David Jones, Vergie Jones, and
Ananias Jones of Toms River, NJ; sister-in-law Shirley Brown of Somerset, NJ; and a
host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
