John Larry Browning (JB)
1941-2025
John Larry Browning passed peacefully on Saturday evening at his home in Atlanta, TX. He was 83.
John was born in Decatur, IL on Christmas Eve 1941, but grew up in Costa Mesa, CA. After serving 4 years in the US Air Force, he was hired by 3M Company in 1968 and subsequently moved to Santa Barbara, CA, where he met and married Cynthia White in December 1971. John and Cyndie moved back and forth across the country for nearly 30 years, following John's job from Santa Barbara to Atlanta, GA; Los Angeles (Garfield), CA; and St. Paul, MN. After retiring in 1996, they moved to Atlanta, TX where John established his handyman company, JB Does. (The name came from a question, "do you know anybody who fixes these things?" and the correct answer was "JB does". We used to giggle whenever new customers called and left messages on his answering machine, asking "Mr. Duz" to return their call).
John suffered a stroke in March 2024 and never really recovered from it. John is survived by his wife, Cyndie of
Cuyahoga Falls, OH and Jimilee Phillips of Atlanta, Texas, who was his "chosen grandson". Although there is no biological connection between the two, John took in and cared for Jimilee as a teenager and taught him how to work hard and be proud of a job well-done. In return, Jimilee devoted himself to caring for John in his final years, and pitched in whenever John needed something, grocery shopping, cooking meals, running errands, going to appointments and the like, even up to his final moments. He was a good friend and grandson to John for more than 25 years.
He is also survived by Jimilee's wife, Coda Phillips, and their children, Jaylee, Jace and Journey, whom he loved very dearly. He was an excellent Papa and they will miss being spoiled by him.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to John's aide, Debbie, and also to Heritage Hospice for their love and support during John's final months-especially his precious nurse, Kristin. The staff at Heritage went above and beyond and will never understand the impact they have had on our family. We are truly grateful to them.
At the request of John, there will be no formal service.
