LaVale, MD-
John Scott Buchanan passed away suddenly on August 17, 2024, in his home in LaVale, Maryland.
He was born on September 15, 1957, in Cumberland, Maryland to Rosalyn and Howard Buchanan. And while ultimately too short, his life was full of love, laughter, and adventure.
John's kindness and generosity were only matched by his dedication and loyalty. Born and raised in Cumberland, Maryland, he recently retired from CBIZ, but continued to show his love for his town by serving on the Downtown Development Commission, participating in town meetings, and continuing upkeep in the downtown area. He also belonged to the LaVale Lion's Club, and was very involved in the Allegany Class of 1975. Whether he was advocating for the safety and progress of Cumberland or having his monthly poker nights with his closest friends, John's passion was obvious. When not working, he loved hiking, kayaking, and going to wineries and listening to live music.
John is survived by his sister, Beth and her husband Gordan Miller; his niece, Tori Woods and her husband Jon Woods, and their two sons, Wyatt and Walker Woods; and his younger niece Lisa Heffington. He also leaves behind his girlfriend of fourteen years, Cathy Nevy. While no words will ever be enough to show the impact John had in this world, the love and memories from all those that love him will carry on, honoring him. The world was a better place with him in it.
Visitation at Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, on Friday, August 23rd. from 1-3 PM. The funeral service will follow at 3 PM, with friend Danny Davis, officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alco Seventyfive (Scholarship Fund), c/o Roxanne Buckalew, 14201 Cedarwood Drive, Apt. 8A, Cumberland, MD 21502.
We love and miss you, John.
