John Burkhardt Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

Of Forest Hills, age 76, died on Monday, June 1, 2020.

Beloved husband of Mary Ann (Remias) Burkhardt for 50 years until her death on May 6, 2019.

Loving and proud father of Karen (Michael) Upchurch of South Fayette.

Treasured grandfather of Sarah and Jake Upchurch.

Special cousin of Kitty Martin of Irwin.

Dear friend of Ellie Hempel and Jack and Carol Myers.

John was a veteran of the Army Reserves. For 20 years he was employed with USSteel Homestead Works until its shutdown. John then became an employee of the Woodland Hills School District's Maintenance Department from where he retired at age 71 in 2015, and was a steadfast fan of 'Woody' High football.

John was the constant, long time caregiver for Mary Ann, the love of his life. John cared about people and relished friendships, new and old. He was forever pleased sharing conversations and recollections with his friends and family. John was a wonderful storyteller, quick with a quip, and enjoyed 'pulling your leg' for lots of laughs. Above all of his pleasures and enjoyments, John was most delighted in spending time with his family and especially with his precious grandchildren, Sarah and Jake.

Friends are welcome on Thursday from 6-8pm and Friday from 2-4 & 6-8pm at Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Turtle Creek / Monroeville Chapel, 1111 Monroeville Ave., Turtle Creek, 412-823-9350.
John's Funeral Service will be in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, East Pittsburgh on Saturday at 10 a.m.

John will be laid to rest with Military Honors in Monongahela Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Hillman Cancer Center, 515 Centre Av., Pgh., Pa. 15232 or www.hillman.upmc.com
