John David Burks, 85, of Sullivan, MO was called home to the Lord on Thursday, November 6, 2025. Born on June 28, 1940, in Savanna, Tennessee to Edward and Ruth (Brown) Burks, John's life began with a miraculous twist of fate as he overcame the challenges of a premature birth, when his uncle all of sudden noticed his tiny leg twitching back to life amidst family prayers. His early years in Savanna were the foundation of his determined spirit before moving to Hayti, Missouri, where his hands learned the value of hard work through picking cotton. John's resilience led him to complete his education and master the meticulous trade of pattern making.
At 16, John's adventurous heart took him to St. Louis, where he began working for Sheldon Industries. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Eva Jean Ray, on November 18, 1967. Together, they were blessed with nine children: Linda, Eveann, Dawn, Pamela, Sheila, Dana, Velier, Johnny II, and Katie. The family moved to Sullivan in 1975, where John continued to hone his skills, eventually working for Meramec Industries. It was in these years that John's passion for woodcrafting flourished, leading to the creation of Burks Woodcraft in the mid-1980s. His craftsmanship was admired by many as he created everything from casters to vent covers with love and precision.
John's Christian faith was the cornerstone of his life, guiding him through all his endeavors and inspiring those around him. He lived his beliefs, showing kindness, integrity, and a commitment to his community. His love for music and dance was infectious, and he could often be found playing his harmonica, filling the room with melodies that touched the soul. John's garden was once a testament to his patience and nurturing nature, a space where he found peace and solace.
A fan of the simple pleasures in life, John enjoyed sitting back to watch a John Wayne western or sipping on a "John Mocha," a special coffee drink from McDonald's named in his honor. Above all, John cherished the time spent with his family, instilling in them the values of love, faith, and the importance of a life well-lived.
John is survived by his beloved children: Dana Carrico and husband, Melvin of Granite City, IL, Velier Anderson and husband, Rodney of Madison, IL, Johnny Burks II and wife, Angela of Dittmer, IL and Katie Hoke and husband, Howard of Sullivan, MO; two sisters, Kathy Odem and husband, Art of Potosi, MO and Judy Hastings and husband, J.D. of St. Genevieve, MO; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva; 5 daughters: Linda Burks, Eveann Heflin, Dawn Damron, Pamela Burks, and Sheila Durbin; a granddaughter, Melissa Burks; his parents, Edward and Ruth Burks; 5 brothers: R.D., Grady, William, J.W. and Steve; and 3 sisters: Inez, Katie, and Frankie.
Services will be 1:00 PM, Wednesday November 12, 2025 at Full Gospel Assembly of God Church in Sullivan with Pastor Ryan Martin officiating. Burial will be at I.O.O.F Cemetery, Sullivan.
Visitation will be 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Wednesday at the church prior to the service.

Although I am happy that John is reuniting with all whom he has loved, lost and missed over the years, I am saddened by the fact that he will no longer be there to greet me nearly every morning as he so often did when I'd be walking my dog past his home, a walk which now seems quite empty knowing he's no longer just steps away. I will miss his stories, his great, great sense of humor, his laugh, his smile, my free handpicked veggies from his garden, his exhibitions on harmonica just for me and ultimately that next breakfast at the Clark Street Cafe that we never got to have. I am going to miss you John and I already do, far more than you could ever imagine. I love you my friend, you are already missed. My condolences to ALL of John's family members whom he spoke of often to me and to those whom I had already met. May God bless and comfort each of you whom John now smiles down upon. I am sincerely sorry for EVERYONE'S loss. Heaven awaits.
