John Wallace Carpenter, a man whose life was marked by an abundance of love, kindness, and generosity, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2024, in Howell, Michigan. Born on July 26, 1952, in Detroit, the son of Robert Stanley and Geraldine Elizabeth Wallace Carpenter, John's early years were spent surrounded by a loving family.
John was a proud graduate of Benedictine High School in Detroit, where he first showcased his talent and passion for football. His skill on the field led him to the University of Michigan, where he played as a tailback in 1972 and 1973. His love for his alma mater never waned, and he remained a lifelong fan of all things Michigan.
His heart was always at home with his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Anne Bennett-Carpenter. He was a devoted father to their children, Joe, Phil and his wife Amy, Katie and her husband Ryan, and Sharri and her husband Aaron. His role as a father was one he cherished deeply.
John's love for his family extended to his grandchildren, Jane, Dani, Patrick, Natalie, Nolan, Kate, and Jacob. He treasured every moment spent with them. His grandchildren will forever remember their grandfather's fun loving nature.
Brother to Christine, Kathy, Gerianne, Patrice, Laurie and the late Beth and Robert Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents.
John's spirit for the outdoors was infectious. His happiest moments were spent in nature, sharing his passion for the outdoors with his family and friends. Up north was a sanctuary for John, a place where he could connect with the world around him and share his love for Michigan's natural beauty.
John cultivated a group of lifelong friends who stood by him through thick and thin. These friends were an extension of his family, and their unwavering support and love were with him until the end.
John lived a life that was full and rich. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him, but his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched.
As we bid farewell to John, we celebrate a life well-lived. Your journey was one of love, and your memory will forever be cherished.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, April 27th from 12 Noon to 8 PM with a Celebration of John's Life beginning at 4 PM.

My condolences to the Carpenter family. John's sports devotion to the University of Michigan is appreciated as many of my relatives attended the University of Michigan. It is good John got to see the National Football Championship once again return to Michigan (go Blue) this past season.
