Of Forest Hills, age 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 6, 2022. John was preceded in death in 2021 by his beloved wife of 65 years, Miranda (Sutto) Carretta. He is survived by five daughters: Maria Carretta of Sharpsburg, Anita Onufer (Roger) of Greensburg, Susan Hoover (Chris) of Dallas, TX, Myra Herbert (Scott) of Penn Hills, and Clara Jablonski (Jeff) of Robinson Twp.; his sister Antoinette Gentile (Ronald) of Springfield, MO; 14 amazing grandchildren: Peter, Addison, Lydia (Cory), Oliver (Calsey), Kelsey (Colt), Daniel, John, Natalie, Anita, Marissa, Zachary, Matthew, Crista, and Kendal; and two great-grandchildren: Skylar and Maxwell. John was born in Chicago and was raised in Italy from age 5 to 16, when he returned and settled in Pittsburgh. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Italy where he met Miranda, and after their marriage they both returned to Pittsburgh. He started a construction company, Mauro Carretta & Sons, and he built his own house and over 200 others in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh. John was an avid gardener, and he maintained many relationships with friends and family over long meals with glasses of homemade wine. He exemplified the values of honesty, integrity, hard work, family, and faith. He also valued health and education for his children, and would tackle any challenge or project with tenacity. He was a tough fighter up until his last day when he was finally reunited in Heaven with his beloved Miranda. Friends received at Wolfe Memorial, LLC, Forest Hills Chapel, 3604 Greensburg Pike, Pittsburgh PA 15221, on Wednesday 2-6:30pm. Mass of Christian Burial at Good Shepherd Catholic Church of St. Joseph the Worker Parish, 1025 Braddock Avenue, Braddock, PA 15104, on Thursday at 10am. Entombment in Good Shepherd Catholic Cemetery.
