John Carter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 19, 2025.
John Nesbit Carter, 70, of Lexington, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, after living with Alzheimer's disease.

Born on September 3, 1954, in Georgetown, South Carolina, to Nesbit and Minerva Carter, John spent 52 years in Georgetown before making his home in Lexington, SC.

John had a lifelong passion for music-especially rock 'n' roll-and could often be found at concerts sharing that joy with friends and family. Recovery was also an important part of John's life. Having achieved sobriety twice, he spent 32 of the last 34 years in recovery. His resilience and openness inspired many who walked a similar path. Through his work in corrections, treatment centers, and counseling, he was able to help many people. Whether it was turning up the volume on a favorite song or telling a story that made everyone laugh, John had a way of bringing energy and warmth to any room.

He is survived by his wife, Patty; daughters, Ginna Taylor, Caitie Harlan (James), Casey Starnes (Robert), and Kendall Skelton (Erich). His unconditional and unbridled love for his wife and family was the foundation on which he built his life. His greatest joy was being "Geegee" to his grandchildren-Madelyn, Rylee, Evie, Teddy, and August. John was preceded in death by his parents, Nesbit and Minerva Carter.

A celebration of John's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages friends to honor his memory by turning up their favorite song and sharing it with someone they love.

"May you grow up to be righteous

May you grow up to be true

May you always know the truth

And see the light surrounding you

May you always be courageous

Stand upright and be strong

May you stay forever young"

-Bob Dylan

I had the privilege of knowing John when he found recovery in Georgetown. He was a good man and always had a wonderful way of making others happy when they were with him. John and I shared one exceptional moment in that we were together at the detention center to see a client when we learned that the World Trade Centers had been hit been hit. Sending sincere condolences to Patty and the girls.

My dear friend John:
It was a sincere privilege to be your neighbor in Lexington. Thank you for the many years of friendship and the great conversations. I will never forget the times you and I used that (it seemed like) 1000 lb grass aerator in our yards. Each and every day, you made the lives of the Torbett family that much better. Thank you, God bless you and your wonderful family. Until we meet again my friend... Shawn

I am a member of same fellowship John belonged to & he was such a beautiful soul in our rooms full of love & hope. John had a natural charm and charisma. He was never at a loss for words, always full of life, and such a joy to be with. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. I´ll be turning up "Stairway to Heaven" so we can all sing along with John in our hearts.
