John David Catlett, 63 of Inwood, WV, passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at INOVA Fairfax Hospital.
John was born in 1962 in Charles Town, WV, the son of John and Dianne Catlett. He was a graduate of John Handley High School, Class of 1980, while in high school he earned his Master Electrician Certificate from The Dowell J. Howard Center. John also attended Thomas Nelson Community College in Newport News earning his Associates of Arts & Sciences in Public Administration. He was a Master Code Official, Certified Building Official, and a Certified Fire and Maintenance Code Official. John belonged to the ICC – International Code Council and VBCOA.
He volunteered as a firefighter and paramedic and retired on April 1, 2025, from the City of Alexandria as the Building Code Director.
John enjoyed fishing and cooking. He was a big Washington Capitals and Nationals fan. John volunteered at Shawnee, Sarah Zane, Rouss, Greenwood, Winchester Rescue Squad (now Millwood) and Williamsburg Fire Dept. He also worked for Valley Health as a patient transporter. Most of all, John loved spending time with his granddaughter who was the light of his life.
John is survived by his fiancé, Pam Himmler, daughter, Jennifer Simon (Gregory) of Nokesville, VA, granddaughter, Zoey Simon of Nokesville, VA, sister, Sue Henderson (Don) of Gore, VA and his former wife and mother of his daughter, Cindy Catlett.
A Celebration of Life will be held for John on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 11am to 1pm at Shawnee Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department, 2210 Valor Dr., Winchester.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of John to The Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research at www.stopsarcoidosis.org.
