John J. Churla, Jr., 87, of Waverly Township, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, in Allied Services Hospice Center, Scranton. He was the husband of Adelinda "Linda" (Lolli) Churla to whom he was married to for 60 years.
Born January 5, 1938 in Scranton, John was the son of the late John and Wanda (Malinowski) Churla.
John graduated from Lafayette College with a bachelor’s degree in engineering and he was a licensed Professional Engineer. He worked as an engineer for Thomas and Betts, Allied Signal, and was also a consultant. John was a parishioner of the Church of St. Gregory, Clarks Green.
John excelled in baseball, football, and basketball in High School. He was an avid golfer and was very proud of his many hole in ones. He most enjoyed spending time with his family and his greatest joy was his grandchildren. He loved attending their sporting events, playing cards with them, and celebrating their achievements.
He is survived by his loving wife Linda, a daughter, Marya Gernhardt (Dr. Roy) of Clarks Summit, grandchildren, Emma and RJ Gernhardt, sisters, Sister Josita Churla and Theresa Burgio, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Churla.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Drs. Landsburg (U Penn), Saidman, Boccagno, Madden, John's son in law, Dr. Roy Gernhardt, and the nurses at the University of Pennsylvania and Geisinger CMC.
The funeral will be on Saturday, December 20th, at 10am at Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Road, Clarks Green with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated. Interment to be private in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Attendees are kindly asked to proceed directly to the Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
