John Joseph Cody, a proud Long Islander, passed away peacefully at the age of 85. Born and raised in West Islip, New York, John's unmistakable Long Island accent and sharp sense of humor remained a constant throughout his life. A lifelong sports fan, he never lost his passion for the New York Yankees or St. John's Red Storm, and his loyalty to his teams matched the loyalty he showed to his family and friends. Known for his sarcasm and wit, John was never afraid to speak his mind, and his laughter was contagious to those around him.
John was a hardworking, dedicated, and loyal man, with a deep love for his family. As a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, his commitment to his loved ones was unwavering. John married Karen, the love of his life in 1962 and had three children, 7 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Family was always his top priority, and he made sure to show them the strength of his love through his actions, humor, and care. John's confidence and steady presence in their lives made him a true pillar of support, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.
A 1958 graduate of West Islip High School, John was known for both his athleticism and his humor. He was honored as the Class Wit and lettered in Baseball, Wrestling, and Soccer. In his high school days, Newsday famously dubbed him "Comet Cody" for his incredible speed on the soccer field-a title that captured the essence of his quickness, both in sport and in life. His athletic ability was matched only by his courage. As a teenager, John began working for Newsday delivering papers by bicycle. One fateful day, while finishing his route, he heard the screams of a child in distress and saw a streak of fire running through the woods. Without hesitation, John chased down the young boy, who had been playing near an open construction fire, and smothered the flames, saving his life. Newsday hailed him as a hero for his selfless act, and his quick thinking was once again celebrated in the paper.
After graduating, John began his career at Newsday, working in the circulation department. Over the course of more than 35 years, he worked his way up the ranks, ultimately becoming a Zone Sales Manager. His dedication and hard work were recognized with numerous accolades, but it was his genuine nature, his loyalty, and his ability to connect with people that made him a respected figure at Newsday and in the community.
John leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, resilience, and humor. He was a funny, confident, and loyal man whose presence brought joy to those around him. His family and friends will carry his memory forward with gratitude and affection. He will be deeply missed, but his impact will live on in the lives he touched.
Rest in peace, John Joseph Cody. Your memory will forever be cherished, and your legacy of love, heroism, and dedication will never be forgotten.
