John Cordes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Woodley Funeral Home - Allison on Mar. 29, 2026.
John Cordes, 66, of Allison, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2026. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, at Trinity Reformed Church in Allison. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, also at Trinity with interment following at Allison Cemetery. Woodley Funeral Home and Crematory, Allison is caring for John and his family.

John Frederic Cordes was born January 19, 1960, in Hampton, Iowa, to Wilbur and Greta (Oltmann) Cordes. He graduated from Allison-Bristow High School in 1978. He attended Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in Agriculture. John worked for Sinclair Elevator Feed Mill in Parkersburg for almost 40 years until his retirement in 2025.

On November 23, 1984, John was united in marriage with Jody Anderson in Collins, Iowa. They moved to Allison and were blessed with five children: Casey, Katy, Sam, Jack, and Betsy. Throughout their childhoods, John was their AWANA leader and their 4-H leader.

John was a man of strong faith and devoted his life to the Lord through baptism on September 7, 2003. He attended Trinity Reformed Church in Allison. John also devoted his life to agriculture. He farmed alongside his father and sons at the family farm in Allison. Raising cattle was another passion in John's life. He showed cattle in 4-H as a teenager and then went on to care for the family's herd with his father and sons. John also loved watching sports and was an avid Iowa State fan.

Of all that he did in his life, his role as a grandpa was his favorite. He loved attending the grandchildren's school events, playing outside with them, and letting them help him on the farm.

John is survived by Jody, children Casey, Sam (Ami), Jack (Amber), and Betsy as well as 8 grandchildren Claire, Will, Bo, Drew, Anna, Ellie, Sonny, and Walker with one more arriving in May, his mother Greta, sisters Suzanne Moore, Sara (Paul) Martin, Lisa Cordes, Emily (Matt) Pittenger, brother-in-law Jimmy (Sherry) Anderson, along with many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his daughter Katy, father Wilbur, mother-in-law Carolyn Anderson, brother-in-law Mike Moore, and nephew Ryan Moore.
