Obituary of John F. Costenbader
John F. Costenbader, formerly of Cumru Township, passed away on December 28, 2025 at Reading Hospital. A devoted husband, father, educator, and community servant, Mr. Costenbader lived a life marked by quiet dedication, integrity, and service to others.
Born in Palmerton, Pennsylvania, Mr. Costenbader was a graduate of Palmerton High School, Class of 1957. He continued his education at Franklin & Marshall College, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Mathematics. His passion for learning and teaching guided his professional life, and he devoted more than three decades to education as a mathematics teacher with the Wyomissing Area School District. During his distinguished career, he served as Chair of the Mathematics Department, introduced computer science classes to the school curriculum, and was an active advocate for his colleagues as President of the Wyomissing Teachers Union.
During summer breaks, along with his wife, Janet, John owned and managed the famous J.C.'s Snokist Ice Cream on Lancaster Pike. Also beyond the classroom, John was an active member of the Lehigh Valley Model A Club and editor of their newsletter. He authored articles in several national publications to educate people about the Ford Model A. John was deeply committed to service and leadership within his community. He was an Eagle Scout and a proud member of the Order of the Arrow, reflecting values of responsibility, service, and honor that remained central throughout his life. He also served the Gouglersville community as a former treasurer and assistant fire chief of the Gouglersville Fire Company.
Above all, John was a devoted family man. He was the beloved husband of Janet (Bunten) Costenbader. He is survived by his sons: Jay Costenbader and his wife, Susan, of Naples, FL; Jeffrey Costenbader and his wife, Sue Ellen, of Robesonia; and Joel Costenbader and his wife, Melissa, also of Rotonda West, FL. He is also survived by his brother, Mar Costenbader of Palmerton; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of great pride and joy in his life.
