John Edward Cox, a cherished family man, esteemed educator, and a proud veteran, left this world on October 20, 2025, at the age of 86, in Wichita, Kansas. Born on April 29, 1939, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to the late Burtice Lewis Cox and Leonila (Jones) Cox, John's journey was one marked by dedication, love, and an unwavering commitment to service.

A First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, John served his country with honor and distinction before embarking on a career that would shape the minds and hearts of countless students. His academic prowess led him to achieve not one, but two master's degrees-one in counseling and the other in music-underscoring his passion for nurturing both emotional well-being and artistic expression.

John's professional life was largely spent at Butler Community College, where he was revered as a wise advisor and a dynamic music educator. His influence extended beyond the classroom, touching the lives of his colleagues and the community at large, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

Family was the cornerstone of John's life. He was a loving husband to his wife of 22 years, Cheryl (Jennings) Cox of Wichita, Kansas. Together, they shared a bond that was a testament to enduring love and mutual respect. John was a guiding force for his children, Colin Cox of Shawnee, Kansas, Brad Cox and his wife Jennifer of Kansas City, Missouri, Jamie Jennings, and Aaron McNamara, both of Wichita, Kansas. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Cecilia Cox and Lucas Tally, who will carry forward the values and lessons he imparted.

Though predeceased by his father Burtice, mother Leonila, sisters Barbara Henson and Cathy Robertson, and grandson Anthony "AJ" Tally, John's memory will be cherished and kept alive by his family and the many friends who became an extended part of his family over the years.

John's life was a symphony of service, education, and the joyous celebration of music. His interests were a reflection of his character-deeply rooted in the love for his family and the transformative power of music. As a mentor, he inspired his students to reach for the stars, and as a family man, he provided a strong foundation of love and support.

In every note of music he played and every piece of advice he offered, John Edward Cox left a lasting impression that will continue to resonate for generations to come. His was a life well-lived, full of purpose and brimming with the melody of a soul that truly understood the harmonies of life. He will be profoundly missed, yet forever remembered as a man who lived with conviction and who loved with all his heart.
