A gentle soul has departed this Earth for the Heavenly Gates-probably on the Santa Fe Super Chief, the train he surely would have chosen for the journey.
Johnny Curfman was born on July 5, 1943, in Lake Elsinore, California, to John R. Curfman and Margaret "Peggy" Vincil Curfman. At just a few months old, Johnny made his first great adventure-traveling by train from California to Tulsa, Oklahoma, accompanied by his mother, grandmother, and Aunt Dana, while his father was overseas with the 20th Fighter Group in England during World War II.
Tulsa was home until 1946, after which Johnny spent the next 14 years in Tarkio and Kansas City, Missouri. Since 1960, he has called Oklahoma home.
From a young age, Johnny developed a love for travel and all things that moved-trains, buses, cars, and trucks. He found joy in the sound of locomotives and the sight of a train pulling into the station. Some of his favorite memories were watching the comings and goings of the great trains at Kansas City Union Station with his parents and brothers from the viaduct above the tracks. He carried this passion throughout his life.
Johnny also had a special fondness for the music of the 1940s and '50s, the soundtrack of his youth and travels. For the past 30 years, he continued to enjoy train-watching excursions in Tulsa and delighted in travel experiences with his caregivers at Brighter Day, including a train trip to Fort Worth, bus journeys to Disney World in Orlando and SeaWorld in San Antonio, and even a cruise to Cozumel, Mexico.
Johnny was preceded in death by his beloved parents. He is survived by his brothers, George Curfman and his wife Sharon, and Ed Curfman and his wife Kathy; his sister, Dorothee Johnson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and a host of extended family and dear friends.
