John Curry Obituary
John Lawrence Curry, Sr., 58, passed away on Sunday morning, May 18th, 2025, at Memorial Hospital, after a short battle with lung cancer. He was a force of lovable energy and embraced the fullness of life.
He was born on January 13, 1967, in Savannah, Georgia to the late Herbert James Curry, Sr, and Frances Moore Curry. He grew up working for his parents in the family dry cleaning business, Curry Dry Cleaners, which was started in 1944 by his grandfather, H.Y. Curry. He later became the owner, and he worked very hard, taking great pride in treating his employees and customers with the utmost respect. He was grateful for the loyalty and patronage of so many in the Savannah area that recently helped the family business celebrate it's 80th year in operation.
He was a member of the Calvary Day School Class of 1985 and remained very close with many of his classmates.
He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting and fishing, both passions that he shared enthusiastically with his family. He admired God's creation and spent a great deal of his time outdoors, breathing in the fresh air, caring for his yard and soaking up the sun. He loved the peace and tranquility he found in nature. He was also a dedicated sports fan. It didn't matter what two teams were playing, he never turned down the chance to watch a football game and cheered for seemingly every team, but had a special place in his heart for the SEC. He also loved the game of golf, for it combined all of his favorite things into one experience…quality time, healthy competition, skill, sportsmanship and pristine landscapes.
For all of these passions and interests, none came close to the love he possessed for his family and Jesus Christ. He was a true family man and a faithful member of Good Shepherd Savannah. Even up until the very end of his life, he spoke often to anyone who would listen about the unfailing love of God, praying with and for many of his nurses and doctors throughout his treatment. He loved larger than life and never met a stranger, extending kindness to everyone. He had a unique gift for making people feel so special and he was never too proud to tell someone he loved them. His enormous heart made all the difference in the lives of those who loved him and his generosity was endless.
He is preceded in death by his father, Herbert James Curry, Sr., and brother, Herbert James Curry, Jr. "Herbie."
He is survived by the love of his life, kindergarten sweetheart and wife of 39 years, Lisa Reid Curry; his mother, Frances Curry; his three children, Ashley Berry (James), John Curry, Jr. (Sarah) all of Savannah; and Emily Jenkins (Bryan), of Waynesboro, Ga. Also surviving are his six beautiful grandchildren, the pride and joy of his life, Charlotte, William, John III, Sophia, Leighton, and Josie. There was nothing he loved more than having his children and grandchildren all together, living life to the fullest. He is also survived by his in-laws, Johnnie and Larry Reid of Savannah; sister, Cathy Knight (David) of Springfield, Ga; brother-in-law, David Reid (Vickie) of Keller, Tx; sister-in-law, Angela Myers (Erik) of Rincon, GA as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 23, 2025, at Fox & Weeks, Hodgson Chapel.
Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Good Shepherd Church, 22 Rose Ave, Isle of Hope.
Pallbearers will be his lifelong friends, Charles Taylor, Terry Otto, Frank Scarbrough, Bubba Strickland, Michael Fell, and Kelmer Durden.
In lieu of flowers the family requests remembrances be made to the new facility fund at Good Shepherd Savannah, P.O. Box 15624, Savannah, Ga, 31416., or the Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the nurses, therapists and physicians at the Medical ICU at Memorial Hospital, Low Country Cancer Care, and The Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute. Their kindness, compassion and commitment to their patients is a living example of the selfless love of God.
