Mildred Curry Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Gailes Funeral Home, Inc. on Feb. 10, 2026.
Mildred Justine Bloom Curry was born on November 3, 1933, in Little River, South Carolina to the late Edith and Willie Bloom. She transitioned peacefully on Thursday, February 5th, 2026, at Moses Cone Hospital. She was 92 years of age.

Mrs. Curry had 11 brothers and sisters, and 3 adopted sisters and brothers, totalling 14 siblings. Mrs. Curry, after her many travels around the world, including Germany, Utah, and Hawaii, chose High Point as her home with the love of her life and husband of 70 years, James Alfred Curry.

Mrs. Curry was raised as a child in Mount Calvary Baptist Church. She loved serving the lord by singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and devoting herself to many church activities.

Mrs. Curry was a very well-educated lady, receiving her undergraduate degree from Benedict College in elementary education. She continued her education, obtaining her master's degrees from Indiana University in psychology and from the University of Georgia in management behavior. She worked in several schools in Columbia, S.C., Washington, D.C., Texas, North Dakota, and North Carolina as a school psychologist. She was so adored for the hard work and dedication she exhibited in every school district she worked in. So much so that once, when she informed the school that she had to leave to be with her husband and family, they wanted to keep her. That's when they proceeded to call Mr. Curry without her knowledge to see if there was any way possible she could stay behind.

She was a quiet, reserved person with a high level of inner drive, strength, and integrity. Her hobbies were reading, traveling, and singing in the church choir, but above all, she was a devoted and loving mother. She had a new school, old school way of doing things. New school, she believed in being independent and making her own money. Old school, she believed strongly in family values: cooking, sewing, cleaning, and decorating at special times of the year. Her hard work would often bleed over from one task to the other. There were many times she would work late into the night after her family duties were done. The light would be on in the bedroom while she worked into the late hours to complete school psychology reports.

She is survived by her husband, Mr. James Alfred Curry of the home, Cliff Curry of the home, Renee Curry of Winston Salem, and Martin Curry of High Point. She has one surviving sister, Ms. Patricia Todd. She has 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members to cherish her loving memory and legacy for generations.
