John S. DeMatteo

Glenville, NY

On September 1st, John answered the Lord's call and returned home to join his beloved late wife, Norma Jean, who passed on October 25, 1992. John was born at the family home in Schenectady's Little Italy neighborhood to his late parents, John and Raffaela. The only son (and "all boy"!) and brother to his sisters Marion, Constance, Philomena (Phyllis), and then to baby sister Ann.

After graduating from St. Joseph's High School, John went onto HVCC and then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1959 where he served as a military police officer in the 19th MP company until Honorably Discharged in 1961.

He married the true love of his life on July 7, 1962, at the former St. John the Baptist Church. John & Norma enjoyed thirty years of marriage. John was a dedicated lifelong GE/KAPL employee as a Safety Engineer. A true multi-tasker, John juggled family and work and returned to college and was a proud Alumnus of Union College class of 1975. After retiring, John became Mr. Fix-it, always helping friends and family, and worked as a seasonal tax preparer. If he couldn't fix something, it's truly broke.

Left to carry on John's legacy of devotion, hard-work and family, are his children, David of Ballston Lake and Jill of Schenectady, and grandchildren Kelly Jean and David of Rotterdam. His son, John Michael, predeceased him in 2006. He is survived by his sisters Phyllis and Ann as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to tinkering and house projects, John enjoyed a nice glass of red wine, a good cigar, and watching the NY Giants. He was proud of his homemade spaghetti sauce. John and Norma enjoyed many years of family camping at the Great Sacandaga Lake with his brother & sister in-law, David and Julie Reali and their children.

In keeping with John's wishes, his private services have been entrusted to Townley & Wheeler funeral home. He will be interred at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery with military honors. The family has requested no flowers please, rather, consider a random act of kindness.
