Dear Dee Family, I first met John and his Mom, Joan, and his Dad, Ed, when John was diagnosed with cancer at a young age. He came to Wyler Children's Hospital at the University of Chicago where I worked. He received great care there, but I know that the treatments were really rough to endure. But when I left Wyler in May of 1979, John was doing well and I hoped and prayed that he would be cured and live a long and happy life. In those days, many of the children I met in the Wyler cancer clinic would not live very long after their diagnosis. John turned out to be the exception.
His Mom, Joan, wrote me a Christmas card every year since 1979 until her passing, filling me in on the family, especially John. When the internet was developed, I was able to find his website and read his Journal. Josn was very proud of him, Nora and Grace.
Working with pediatric patients and their families changed me very much. I will always love them for what they gave me by allowing me to enter their lives, love, trust, compassion and warmth. They are always with and a part of me. About 5 years ago I began donating platelets with the American Red Cross every other week. Platelets are often desperately needed by cancer patients for their recoveries from treatments. Since I found this out, I have dedicated every donation to all those kids I knew at Wyler Hospital. And with John's passing, they have all now died.
John and his folks let me into their hearts and I will be forever grateful. I am so sorry to hear of his passing, but he will always be a star in my memory as I donate platelets. I send my love to all his family! Mary Kay Willert, formerly of Chicago, now from Minneapolis, MN.

I am very late in sending this message. I followed John's forecast for years and referred a lot of people to his website for " true forecasts" and encouraged our guests in Paradise, MI to follow him regularly. I was astounded today to read where he had passed away, and had no idea that he was a candidate for a heart transplant. I could tell from his family pictures that he was a "good guy" -- and it seems that Good Papa Bears are a diminishing breed these days. My sincere condolences to his family.

I was an avid follower of johndee.com for many a year (since the beginning!) & I have eagerly awaited his journal entries for years not to mention his annual winter forecast. We wouldn't make the 400 mile drive to Mt Bohemia without checking his forecast (and only his forecast!). I did meet him once when he was doing some charity bartending in Lac La Belle and he was exactly who I thought he would be. Being from the Chicagoland area I was always envious he was able to make a home in the UP as a lot of us down south always wished we could be him. Although I did not know him personally this has hit a lot harder than you'd think - nothing but kind thoughts to his family at this time and may John Dee Rest In Peace - you will be missed by more people than you could ever imagine - God Bless

As a former MTU student, I really enjoyed reading John's journal posts. They brought back fond memories of my time in the UP. I will miss him.
