Scott Alan Helmers of Eagle River, MI (formerly Mercer, WI) passed away on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2025, in the Keweenaw Peninsula, surrounded by family. Scott was born on September 19th, 1957 in Milwaukee, WI to Harold and Margaret Helmers (Hasenberg). He was the second oldest of five children. Scott didn't stay little for long, as he eventually grew to reach a height of 6'8".
Scott was a graduate of Custer High School in Milwaukee, WI. He later worked for Evinrude Motors (Milwaukee) and Gator Cable (Germantown). This is where he met his first wife, Wendy Teague, with whom he shares three beautiful daughters. In 1984, Scott moved his young family to his favorite childhood vacation spot, where his Mom grew up, Mercer, WI.
Mercer proved to be the right place for Scott, as that is where he later met the love of his life, Stephanie (Jonovic). Scott and Steph married at Lake of the Falls in the summer of 1989. Once Scott's daughters graduated and moved away, Scott and Steph decided to relocate as well. Together, they made the move to Eagle River, MI where they fell in love with a gorgeous, historic, 20-acre property they would call home for the next 17 years. Scott loved learning about the incredible history of his property, exploring the old copper mine, and walking amidst the streams and forest gracing his land. He also enjoyed collecting agates, and other stones, on the shores of Lake Superior which he used while crafting handmade silver jewelry for his loved ones.
Scott was many things; a man of strong faith, a talented wood worker, a collector, a skilled hunter. He loved hunting bear and deer, and the friendship and camaraderie that hunting season could bring. He was a fun, beloved friend to many who knew him. He always had a story to share, or a funny saying to get you smiling. You could often find Scott surrounded by friends, and his many golden retrievers throughout the years. Scott will be greatly missed.
Scott is preceded in death by his parents Harold and Margaret Helmers; wife Stephanie Helmers; brother Daniel Helmers, and sister Julie Canarr.
Scott is survived by his three daughters Tamara Helmers, Amanda Helmers and Megan Tallard, and his sweet golden retriever, Millie; 5 grandchildren, Weston, Auston, Chloe, Paizley and Louis; sisters Amy Helmers (David A.) and Holly Helmers; nephews Luke, Cody, Clay, Spencer, and Beau; and niece Danielle.
A graveside service for Scott Helmers will be held at the Mercer Cemetery in Mercer, WI on Saturday, October 18th, 2025 at 10:00 a.m., with a celebration of life to follow at the Great Northern Hotel banquet room.
