John Peter DiLauro was born in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday, February 18, 1939, when a gallon of milk cost about 23 cents, to loving parents, Michael DiLauro and Jennie Zaccagnino DiLauro. He died on a Monday, September 29, 2025. He lost his Mother when he was only 3 years old. He lost his Father when he was 20 and in the U.S. Marine Corps. The Bereaved include his older brother, Louis, whom still lives in Brooklyn, and his loving wife, Connie. Preceded in death are his Brother, Anthony (Tony), and half-brother, Joseph. John's adult life began early; after his time in the Marines, he married Rita DiGenova of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; together they produced 3 beautiful children, John Michael DiLauro (Pamela), Lisa Ann DiLauro of Roanoke, Va. and Christopher Anthony Scott DiLauro of Richmond, Va. John started his career as a Tool and Die Maker, a skilled craftsman who designed and created precision tools and metal forms and other materials. Several years passed and they moved to Roanoke, Va and opened an Aamco Transmissions franchise on Williamson Rd in 1968 which grew to another transmission shop on Franklin Rd, all while having a Maaco Paint and Bodyworks in Roanoke, plus another transmission shop in Martinsville. Transmission America is still on Franklin Rd thanks to his oldest son, John Michael and grandson, Evan. In his spare time, he got his Real Estate license, as well as Contractor's license and subsequently developed and built 9 residential homes. Not too shabby for a boy from Brooklyn. He had married Connie Shutherland Thompson in 1994, who was the Mother of Ginny Echo Thompson and Misty Shanna Thompson Reynolds (Larry) of Portland, Oregon. He spent the last 40 years of his life at Smith Mountain Lake, Va. He loved his family above all else, which included 7 grandchildren, Evan (Rachel), Jake (Sierra), Jamie (Ashlee), Ev (Colin), Eleven, Amulet and Jupiter, and 4 Great Grandchildren, Harper, Summer, Urijah, and Oliver, plus Lucy on the way and baby boy Cain on the way. Also loved are several special nieces, nephews, and neighbors. He enjoyed boating, traveling by Motorhome, listening to music, viewing the Stock market (sometimes!), remodeling, and playing with his dog Bella. A memorial service will be held at Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, 1706 Grandin Rd SW, Roanoke, on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 2:00 pm. The family plans a Reunion and Celebration of his life in the Coming Spring. Details to be announced at a later date.
