It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Thomas Dockray, born on November 11, 1941, in Providence, Rhode Island, who left us on September 26, 2025, at the age of 83. John made his mark in the world, and his legacy will surely be felt by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
John was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, and his service was a source of pride throughout his life. To those who looked closely, he often presented a tough and uncompromising exterior, yet beneath that hardened shell lay a heart as soft as a teddy bear's. He had an extraordinary gift for storytelling, effortlessly reflecting on the past with sharp wit and a twinkle in his eye, making even the simplest tales come alive. Everyone who crossed his path knew him for his knack for bringing laughter into the room, often lightening the heaviest of hearts with a well-timed joke or a playful quip.
He possessed a sharp mind, and his steadfast, somewhat stubborn nature meant that he was unwavering in his principles-but those who took the time to get to know him discovered a lifelong friend and confidant.

John was preceded in death by his sons, Michael and John Dockray; his parents, Harry and Anna Dockray; his sister, Marilyn Davis; and his brother, Bob Dockray.

John is survived by his beloved daughter, Shannon Knapp; his life partner, Carol Mitz; his brother, George Dockray; his two grandchildren, Amanda Dockray and Troy Dockray; and two great grandchildren, Declan and Waylen Dockray.
In honor of his life, the family will be holding funeral services on Thursday, October 2, 2025 at Joe P. Burns Funeral Home of Madison at 11:00AM. A visitation will be held one hour prior at 10:00AM. Graveside services will be held with military honors at the Tallahassee National Cemetery at 1:00PM.
He leaves behind a legacy of strength, love, and many fond stories. Although he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him. Rest in peace, John Thomas Dockray. You will be missed but never forgotten.
