John Durbin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Peterson & Patch Funeral Home on Jan. 21, 2026.
John A. Durbin, age 66, of Waukegan, passed away peacefully at home on January 17, surrounded by his loving family and the familiar music of the Grateful Dead, after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.

Born on April 16, 1959, in Waukegan, John was a proud lifelong resident. He attended St. Anastasia Catholic School and graduated from Waukegan High School in 1977. He went on to build a life marked by dedication, exceptional craftsmanship and an unwavering devotion to those he loved.

John's later years were shaped by a renewed faith in Christ, nurtured through his time at Cornerstone Church, a source of deep peace and strength. He spent his final days resting in the comforting hope of eternal life.

A master woodworker, John cofounded Exclusive Woodworking and nuHaus alongside his brother Doug. For more than 42 years, these successful cabinetry, millwork and design businesses reflected his pride in quality workmanship, integrity and meticulous attention to detail. He was widely respected and admired as an expert in his craft.

John was known for his love of the Grateful Dead, a collector of fine wine and his many years as a member of Glen Flora Country Club. His easygoing spirit, steadfast loyalty and quiet generosity left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He was also a dedicated supporter of Lambs Farm, a cause close to his family's heart, where he proudly served on the Board of Directors.

John is survived by his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of more than 46 years, Cheryl (Cavener). He was a devoted father to his daughters, Allison (Daniel) Zabrowski and Lauren (Art) Brzezicki and a proud grandfather to Patrick and Nora Zabrowski, who were truly the light of his life. He is also survived by his brothers, Doug (Judy) and Tom; his brother-in-law William (Andrea) Cavener; sister-in-law Diana (Butch) Allen; as well as a large and cherished extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many dear friends. John also leaves behind his loyal dog, Ripple (Rip).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Julie Durbin and his mother-in-law, Mary Ann Cavener.

Though his time was far too short, John's legacy endures in the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply and forever missed.

May the four winds blow you safely home. Fare Thee Well.

A grateful celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Donations in John's memory may be made to Lambs Farm, 14245 W. Rockland Rd., Libertyville, IL 60048, or at lambsfarm.org.
