John Egan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jones Funeral Home - Dixon on Feb. 25, 2026.
Those who knew my dad knew he was an extraordinary father. He never missed a game, a concert, or a moment that mattered. When we didn't have a soccer coach, he stepped up even though he didn't know the game. He showed up to every choir concert and supported every dream I chased, from mission trips to joining the Army and studying abroad. He believed I could do anything, and that belief shaped my life.

My dad fought ALS for eight years with strength, dignity, and unwavering faith. While the disease weakened his body, it never touched his heart. When he knew his time might be limited, he left me a journal filled with letters for milestones he was blessed to witness and for the ones he knew he might miss. Even then, he put his family first.

My parents were married on March 13, 1998. My mom was his devoted and sole caregiver throughout his illness, standing beside him with steadfast love until his final breath.

His favorite verse, taught to him by his mother as a boy, was John 11:25: "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die." That promise gave him peace, and now comforts our family.

John was preceded in death by his mother, Joan Ann Egan; his father, Edward Frances Egan; and his brother, James Edward Egan. He is survived by his sister, Nancy (Bob) Schaeffer; his daughter, Savannah Egan; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would also like to extend heartfelt gratitude to John's dear friend, Dan Langenfeld, whose steadfast friendship and loyal presence throughout John's illness brought comfort and strength to us all.

If the world remembers anything about my dad, I hope it remembers that he showed up, loved deeply, and fought hard for the people he loved. I will forever cherish the time I was blessed to have him as my father.

A celebration of John's life will be held on Friday, March 6th, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. at Jones Funeral Home, 204 South Ottawa, Dixon, Illinois 61021. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather at The Crystal Cork, 219 W. 1st Street, Dixon, Illinois 61021, for continued remembrance and shared stories. Food will be provided, and beverages will be available for purchase.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to support the family during this time. Contributions may be made at: https://tinyurl.com/John-Egan-Memorial
