John Patrick Feeney, 81, of
Marshfield, Massachusetts, passed peacefully on March 24th, 2024.
He was born in
Boston, Massachusetts in 1943 to John and Eleanora Feeney. He attended Charlestown High School, before training to become a Master Electrician and going to work at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.
John met the love of his life, Patricia Johnston in 1961 at the Capital Market on Morrissey Boulevard in Dorchester. John and his buddy, Ken Beeson, flipped a coin to see who would get to ask her out first, and John won. Excited to start their new lives together, the two were married on October 16th, 1965 at Saint Ambrose Church in
Dorchester, Massachusetts.
John and Patricia couldn't wait to start a family of their own, and their children meant the world to them. Together they raised four wonderful children, John, Patricia, Denice, and Cathleen. Over the course of his life, they took their family on many great adventures.
Though he "played" many roles in his life (mayor, police officer, priest, etc, etc, etc), John's favorite role was that of dad and grandparent. He was the grandparent to ten grandchildren: Patrick, Emily, and Erin Feeney, Andrea and Wyatt Whalen, Cameron, Brynna, and Margaret McNulty, and Kayla and James Salvaggi. He treasured his time with his grand kids and loved being their grandpa, never failing to take them on just as many adventures as he took his kids.
Of all the pets over the years, Calvin was John's dog, always following him around or sitting by his side. And the only cat he ever loved was his furry buddy, Nook, who will miss him dearly.
John's closest and oldest friends, Ken Beeson and Buddy Himes, were practically inseparable from high school onward. Ken was Cathleen's godfather and Buddy and his wife Jody would visit every couple of years in their RV, inspiring John and his wife to get an RV of their own.
John was passionate about his role as Supervisor at the MBTA, working for the company for 35 years. Working so hard that he would sometimes fall asleep standing up, once resulting in his coworkers placing a bouquet of flowers in his sleeping hands. He also drove a school bus in Marshfield as well as the bus for the Marshfield Senior Center for a few years after retiring.
John was an active member of Saint Christine's Church, devoting his time and energy to being a Deacon, a Eucharistic Minister, a CCD teacher, and providing his electrician expertise for the church whenever needed.
Everyone who knew John knew how much he loved his motorcycles. He thought he was such a hardcore biker, that he once rode his Harley all the way back from
Daytona Beach, Florida with Paul Dwyer in the cold and harsh March weather. He was also known to be very involved in Marshfield town politics, and co-hosted the weekly segment of The Open Chair on MCTV with Eric Kelley, following his other friend, Joe Pecevich's, show Control Room.
John will always be remembered for his pride in his work, his kindness and generosity, and for his ability to tell long, drawn out stories with way too many details. We will miss reminding him to "get back to the point of the story Dad". We couldn't have asked for a better sibling, spouse, parent, and grandparent, and we will miss John every day. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eleanora Feeney, and his brother, Robert Feeney, and is survived by Robert's wife, Sharon Feeney, his older sister, Eileen Priest and her late husband, Steve, his younger sister, Laura Schroeder and her husband, Tim, and his seven nieces and nephews: John, David, Peter, Jennifer, Timothy, Suzy, and Missy.
