John P. Ferko Sr., age 97, husband of the late Mary R. (Chenger) Ferko, of Phoenixville, PA, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2023 at home. Born on May 30, 1925 in Cleveland, OH, he was a son of the late Michael Ferko and Mary Theresa (Hudak) Ferko.
Mr. Ferko graduated from Phoenixville High School. He honorably and proudly served in the United States Army, 79th Infantry Division, during World War II, having been stationed in France. For his service, Mr. Ferko received numerous commendations and medals, including the Bronze Star, the French Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart.
Mr. Ferko began his career in charge of the mail room at the Valley Forge Army Hospital. He retired from the Phoenixville Post Office, where he started his work sorting in the back and ended up as a clerk at the front desk.
Mr. Ferko was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Phoenixville, where he was active with the Holy Name Society and assisted with bingo. Most recently, Mr. Ferko was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Spring City.
Mr. Ferko was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing in Tioga and Clinton counties for over 60 years. In the past, he was active in adult softball leagues in Phoenixville, and he enjoyed gardening. Throughout his life, he had many beagles that he loved, including his current dog Hunter.
Mr. Ferko is survived by two children, Theresa (Ferko) Gebhard of East Coventry and John P. Jr., husband of Patrice A. Miller-Ferko of Brookhaven, PA; three grandchildren, Justin Gebhard, Jessica Tente, and Katharine Gebhard; and two great-grandchildren, Mabel Rose and Madeline Diane Tente. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Ann Ferko.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral mass at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 3640 Schuylkill Road, Spring City, PA on Friday, February 10, 2023 at 11:00 am. Officiating will be Rev. Charles O'Hara. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Phoenixville, PA. Friends will be received from 9:45 am - 10:45 am in the Church on Friday morning. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 90, P.O. Box 2499, West Chester, PA 19380 or to the Purple Heart Foundation by visiting www.purpleheartfoundation.org/donate. Arrangements are being handled by the Campbell - Ennis - Klotzbach Funeral Home, Inc., Phoenixville, PA. Condolences may be offered online at www.PhoenixvilleFuneralHome.com.
