John Franklin Fields, 74, of Fields Road died on Wednesday, January 18th at Bladen East Health & Rehab.

More commonly known as “Johnny Red”, he was born July 16, 1948, son of the late John Edgar Fields and Inez Townsend Fields. Johnny married later in life and spoke often of his deeply missed and beloved wife, “Carrie Ruth” Monroe Fields.

Johnny Red was a farmer all his life, growing corn, soybeans, and tobacco. While he farmed his own land, Johnny willingly, and servant-heartedly, lent a helping hand to many in the community. He faithfully planted a garden full of cabbage, okra, Spanish peanuts, turnips, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes, garden peas, and tomatoes each year. Johnny’s deeper desire was recognizable in his giving of the garden harvest to family and friends. Johnny Red was an avid hunter of deer, duck, and rabbit among other wildlife, and he loved to fish in the swampy waters of the “Big Swamp.”

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; five brothers, Louis, Jack, Ronald, Max, and Jerry Fields; and four sisters, Arleen Wise, Doris Inman, Myrtle Fields, and Norma Strickland.

Left to cherish his memory is one brother, Robert Fields of Tar Heel; one sister, Inez Lemmonds of Greensboro; and many nephews and nieces.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 1:00 pm in the Monroe Family Cemetery, off of main street in Tar Heel, NC with the Reverend Vance Tyson officiating.
