John A. Geiger, DVM, Age 74, of Manchester, and longtime resident of Croswell, passed away on December 2, 2024, after an extended illness. He was born April 25, 1950, in Lansing, Michigan to the late Esther (Grimes) and Harold Geiger.
John grew up and lived in Croswell, graduating from Croswell-Lexington High School in 1968. He went on to study Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. Upon graduation in 1973 he returned home to Croswell to practice veterinary medicine as the third generation Dr. Geiger at Geiger Veterinary Clinic. For nearly 50 years he cared for his clients and their animals (large and small) within Croswell and throughout the surrounding area.
John met his wife of more than 51 years, Maryellen (Dee) Pengelly Geiger, while at Michigan State University. They were married in Ann Arbor in 1973 and treasured raising their two children Emily and Milton, together.
John was devoted to his family, community and profession. He served several terms on the Croswell-Lexington Board of Education, including times as president. He also served many years on the Croswell City Council. From childhood and into adulthood he was active with the Boy Scouts of America as both a scout and leader. He was a lifelong member of the Croswell Presbyterian Church, acting as an Elder for a time. He was a member of many professional organizations and gave his time and support to many area agricultural fairs and events. John's love for the City of Croswell, its history, and the people who live there, was central to who he was.
John cherished time with his wife, children and grandchildren, both in his beloved Croswell home and through many travel adventures. He enjoyed being outdoors, camping, and being surrounded by majestic scenery, including many trips to Yellowstone National Park, where he was never without his camera. John had many talents and could creatively fix or build almost anything. He also found joy in jigsaw puzzles, fantasy books and all things Harry Potter. He cherished his grandchildren, whom he would sit with chatting happily and teasing lovingly.
John was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Esther Geiger. He was especially fond of his grandparents Milton J. and Ida Geiger, who also preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife Dee (Maryellen), his children Emily (David) Bartley, of Manchester and Milton (Cheryl) Geiger of Windsor, CO, sister Ann (John) Matthews of Croswell and brother Richard (Robin) Geiger of Saugatuck, his grandchildren Katherine Bartley, Roslyn and Shane Geiger, his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
John had a quick wit and quiet sense of humor, that endeared him to those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be from 3-9 P.M. on Friday, December 13 at the Pomeroy Funeral Home in Croswell. A memorial service will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Croswell, with visiting at the church from 10-11 A.M. Saturday morning. Pastor Bill Wright will officiate. Burial will be in the Croswell Cemetery. Memorials in memory of Jonn may be made to either the City of Croswell Parks and Recreation at 100 N. Howard Ave. Croswell, Michigan 48422 or Yellowstone Forever at www.yellowstone.org.

I remember John coming to the farm after midnight on a Sunday/Monday to treat our old grey mare, Sugar. She had a small wound on her leg that became terribly infected and caused her whole leg to swell up. It was July or August and so hot! The mosquitoes were a torture, but John was patient and kind. He treated her and taught me what to do for her. Sugar lived for many more years and John has remained forever in my heart.
