John W. Gemmer, 76, of Goshen, died Monday, May 12, 2025, at Hubbard Hill Estates, Elkhart.
He was born June 9, 1948, in South Bend to Edwin C. and June E. (Wade) Gemmer.
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" (Jeremy Elswick) McEachern, Goshen; and four grandchildren, John Riley, Drew, Mia, and Lily McEachern.
John was a proud and loving father and grandfather who found great joy in watching his grandchildren grow and thrive. His family was the heart of his life, and he cherished the time they spent together.
John was a 1966 graduate of Goshen High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1968 to 1972 during the Vietnam era. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to the area and graduated in 1975 from Indiana University, South Bend.
A member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, John was well known in the community in a variety of capacities, most notably as owner and publisher of The Goshen News from 1978 to 1999.
He was an active and dedicated member of the Goshen community, serving with the Goshen Rotary Club, Goshen Jaycees, and as a board member for ADEC. His commitment to civic service and local engagement left a lasting impact on those around him.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, with a 6 p.m. rosary service. A 10 a.m. mass will take place Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Violett Cemetery, Goshen with military honors.
Memorial gifts may be directed to Indiana University Kidney Transplant Program, Indianapolis; or ADEC, Bristol.
