VIRGINIA – JOHN ROY GINGLES, 78, a native of Wyoming and the son of the late Roy E. Gingles and Mary Cassel both of Torrington, Wyoming. Later in life his stepfather was the late Charles H. "Chuck" Anderson also of Wyoming.
John Gingles earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Wyoming in Laramie, studying on a Ford Foundation Scholarship. Gingles spent two years in South America as a Fulbright Scholar and Professor and served as a Visiting Fulbright Professor and was awarded a fullProfessorship and served as Chairman of the Department of American History and English Language Studies at the National University in Asuncion in Paraguay.
He has also held positions as a University Professor of American History and American Studies at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, and at the University of Idaho.
Over the course of his career he has also held positions as a National Park Ranger
in Yellowstone National Park; as a Legislative Aide in the U.S. Congress; and as the Congressional Liaison for the Department of Interior during President Jimmy Carter's Administration. His career spanned many years from the mid-1960's to his retirement in 2001.
John Gingles is survived by his beloved wife of 34 yearsCynthia "Cindy" Mitchell – Gingles of Manassas, Virginia and by his beloved daughter, Lisa M. Gingles, Grandson Ricky and Great Granddaughter, Elaina, as well as his two brothers, Jim and Joe Gingles, and by several nieces and nephews. John Gingles was the son-in-law of the late Congressman and Mrs. Donald Mitchell (Don and Gretta).
Calling hours for Mr. Gingles will be on Tuesday from 4:00 – 6:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday morning 10:00 am at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
