John Glanzer, 71, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD surrounded by his loved ones. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings, SD. Visitation will be held one hour prior starting at 1:00 pm Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at Rude's Funeral Home.
John Harold Glanzer was born in Mitchell, SD on December 21, 1950, to Emmett and Evelyn (Richardson) Glanzer.
John graduated from Kimball High School in 1969 and attended the University of South Dakota until 1973 when he enlisted in the Army. He was honourably discharged in 1975. In 1985, John married the love of his life, Michelle Mascola, Bronx, NY, and they settled in Brookings, SD. He continued his education at South Dakota State University where he graduated in 1991.
John was employed by the USDA North Central Agriculture Research Laboratory. He enjoyed his work and the great people he met at the lab. He would often regale them with his adventures in fermenting foods and cold therapy. John loved animals, particularly his dogs. While his mother was in assisted living, he would bring his yellow Labrador, Buddy, to visit with the residents and stop by the kitchen for snacks. For many years he volunteered with Amnesty International working to help to free political prisoners. His spirit of giving was felt by many in the Brookings area and around the world. There never was a person in need he didn't try to help.
He was loved and will be missed by his four children: Alexander Glanzer and Lissette Ramos, Elizabeth, NJ; Matthew Glanzer and Shelby Young, Sioux Falls, SD; Jane Glanzer, Baton Rouge, LA; and John Glanzer, Brookings, SD. He was in love with his first grandchild, Emmett Don Glanzer, of Sioux Falls who was born in October 2022. Other survivors include his sister, Jane Glanzer-Meyer and husband Ed Meyer of Somerset, NJ, his sister-in-law Bernadette Marino and husband Louis Marino and brother in-law John Mascola.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett and Evelyn Glanzer, and an infant sister Nancy Glanzer.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's name to the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum National History Day Program; 977 11th Street, Brookings, SD 57006
