John Wynn Gohl

John Wynn Gohl, a beloved resident of Shelby Township since 2010 and formerly of Milford and Pontiac, passed away on June 27, 2024 at age 83. He was born on March 30, 1941 in Gary, Indiana to John Franklin Gohl Jr. and Mary Alice (nee Baker) Gohl. John grew up in Berkley, Michigan, where he graduated from Berkley High School.
In his early years, John worked alongside his father in excavation, an experience that laid the foundation for his strong work ethic. He later worked on the railroad and eventually became a successful bar owner in Pontiac and Milford. After selling his bars in 1990, John found his true calling as the owner of several Dairy Queen locations in Pontiac, Utica, Romeo, and Sterling Heights, a role he cherished, for almost 25 years. He found it to be the most rewarding career of his life.
John proudly served his country as a veteran of the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. His service to his country was a testament to his dedication.
On September 29, 2012, John married the love of his life, Elaine, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica. Together, they enjoyed almost 12 years of marriage filled with love and companionship.
In his leisure time, John found joy in feeding the birds and squirrels in his backyard, hiking and walking, especially at Stony Creek, where he loved watching the wildlife, and enjoying the sun setting over the lake. Above all, John cherished his family and was always ready to offer advice and support. He was known for his loyalty, love, hard work, and integrity.
John Wynn Gohl leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to his family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, including his wife, Elaine Gohl; children, Trish (Tom) Scott, Allison (Gary) Ludwig, Jodi (Dave) Curtis, Suzanne (Jon) Gleason, Lorraine Krill, and Stephanie (Derek) VanSickle; and numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, and loved them all deeply. He was thought of as a "fun" Grandpa.
John is preceded in death by his daughter, Jeanette Gonzalez; parents, John F. Gohl Jr. and Mary Gohl; and siblings, Stanley, Pamela Sue, and Richard.
Visitation for John will be held from 3:00 – 8:00 PM on Monday, July 1, 2024 at Gramer Funeral Home Diener Chapel, 48271 Van Dyke Avenue, Shelby Township, MI 48317; (586) 731-4150. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at the same location.
