John Nelson Groom was born on August 10, 1935, to John George & Ancelina Groom in
Corpus Christi, TX.
John and his first wife Loures adopted a son and named him John N. Groom Jr.
As a young man, John's father encouraged him to participate in scouting. He loved it and was able to earn Eagle Scout at a young age. Football was his other passion. At Miller High School he was nominated for All State and All American, and at TCU University, he won All State Senior Bowl. At TCU, he also finished his bachelor's degree and went on to coach football in Taylor, Texas for 2 years, Irving High School for 2 years, and was head coach at Mathis High School for 7 years. He earned a master's degree in Secondary Education at North Texas State University.
John took a break from coaching in 1966-1970 to be the director of a 10,500-acre Boy Scout Ranch in Skiatook, Oklahoma for 2 years.
John went on to coach for 1 year at Carrol High School in Corpus Christi, and to be an "Out of School Youth Coop Coordinator". During this time, he met and married Mary Pat Groom, whose children were David and Sandra McGinnis. He retired in 1994 with 35 years of teaching & coaching. His last adventure was playing pro football for the British Columbian Lions in Vancouver, Canada, but his knee injuries prevented anymore football.
John loved his family and enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and especially being a member of his coffee club!
Preceding John in death are his parents, John George & Ancelina Groom, and his sister, Cynthia Groom Smith.
Left to cherish his memories are his children David and Sandra McGinnis, grandchildren Morgan, Taylor, Cameron McGinnis, and Hunter and Harrison Johnson, great grandchildren, Skye and Lulu McGinnis, Raelyn, Bennett, Jessa, Rylee, and Nolan, two nieces, Tracy George and Delane Hill, great niece, Delaney Johnson, and great nephew John Prinz.
