John Henry Hackett, age 65, of Portsmouth RI, passed away at home on June 16th, 2024. He was the son of the late Dr. Robert S. Hackett, DMD, and Mildred Astle Hackett.
Born and raised in Fall River, Mass, John was a 1977 graduate of Bishop Connolly High School, and a graduate of Providence College with a degree in Accounting in 1983. John lived in the California Bay area for 15 years, working in various capacities, including accounting and consulting, as well as creating proprietary software for commercial transportation safety.
He returned to Portsmouth Rhode Island in 2016, to be close to his family. For the past 8 years until his death, John was a postal worker in Portsmouth where he cherished the relationships he developed with his coworkers, families on his route, and especially the children he encountered as he made his deliveries. John always made sure he had treats along to provide to all the dogs he adored so much on his route. Being right in the middle of an Irish Catholic family of 8, John was a fun loving, mischievous little boy who made our childhood adventures quite memorable. As an adult, he was an intelligent, loving man who possessed a deep faith. John treasured his 18 nieces and nephews, often surprising them with unexpected visits. He was full of adventure, fascinating stories, and always made sure those visits were memorable.
His hobbies included a passion for golf. He played for many years on both the east and west coast. He was lucky enough to have joined the "Hole-in-One" club in 1992, after hitting a nine-iron 163 yards on the third hole of Oakhurst CC in Clayton California. John loved the ocean; kayaking to his secret oyster beds, cooking and sharing his harvest with his seafood loving family. Most recently, John found peace and joy being outdoors, appreciating nature, and gardening in his yard.
John is survived by his 7 brothers and sisters; Patricia A. Hackett of Nashville, TN, Robert S. Hackett, Jr. of Mattapoisett, Ann M. Hackett of Portsmouth, RI, Kathleen A. McDermott and her husband James of Ponte Vedra, FL, Colleen A. Gustafson and her husband Paul of Naples, FL, Jane A. Tetreault and her husband Claude of Fall River and Jo Ann Hackett Medeiros and her husband Matthew of Dartmouth, eighteen nieces and nephews; Katharine and Emily McConnell, Julia and Laura Nasser, Jennifer Dolan, Sarah O'Brien, Michael McDermott, Michael, Matthew and Jenna Gustafson, Christopher, Matthew and Catherine Tetreault, Mark, John, Eric, Kelly and Kristen Medeiros; nine great-nieces and nephews, Dallas Nasser, Ruby and Evangeline Polselli, Savannah, Jack and Charlie Dolan, Emma McDermott, Nora and Mason O'Brien.
