John "Johnny" Hamilton
John Robert Hamilton, 82, of Jefferson peacefully passed away at home with his family around him on Nov. 9, 2025. Known by his family and friends as "Johnny," he was born on Aug. 6, 1943, to Robert John and Kathleen Karol (Wilt) Hamilton in
Jefferson, Iowa. He grew up in Jefferson, graduating from Jefferson High School in 1961.
He met the love of his life and future business partner, Alice Grote, at the Starline Ballroom in Carroll, Iowa. They were married on July 13, 1963, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Mount Carmel, Iowa. Four sons were born to this union: Bob, Mark, Johnny, and Danny. After graduating from high school, Johnny worked in his father's trucking and fertilizer business. It wasn't long after that he started his own trucking and excavation company. In 1976, Johnny and Alice added a ready-mixed concrete business, Greene County Redi-Mix, later known as Hamilton Redi-Mix. His work ethic and perseverance endeared him to his many customers.
In his younger years he enjoyed stock car racing, snowmobiling and snow skiing with his family and friends. He also loved boats of all kinds and had many different boats during his lifetime. He particularly loved boating and entertaining his family and friends in the Florida Keys and at Lake Panorama. He was a member of St Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
His family and friends were most important to him. He was a proud grandpa to five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, spending as much time as he could with them and enjoying their many activities.
Johnny is survived by his loving wife and lifelong business partner, Alice; sons Bob (Becci), Mark (Jessica Savits), and Johnny (Connie), all of Jefferson; as well as five grandchildren-Johnny Dennis (Allison) Hamilton, Kayla (Bryan) Riedell, Dylan (Emma) Hamilton, Alyse (Larry) Rogers, Cache (Ndonga) Hamilton, and eight great-grandchildren-Tate, Trae, and Hallie Hamilton; Francis, Alice, and Dennis Riedell; and Landry and Brady Rogers.
Other survivors include his brother Tom Hamilton of Newport, Tenn.; sisters- and brothers-in-law Joyce Grote of Minooka, Ill., John and Jeanne Rosener of South Sioux City, Neb.; James and Mary Ann Grote of Cave Creek, Ariz.; Bill and Nancy Grote of Withee, Wisc.; Judy and Duane "Butch" Oberding of Iowa Falls, Iowa; Ted and Peggy Grote of Gibson City, Ill., as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Danny Hamilton, and parents, Robert and Karol Hamilton; parents-in-law Herman and Colette (Schettler) Grote; brothers-in-law Paul Grote, Ralph Grote, Norbert Grote, Leonard Grote, John "Jack" Grote, Lyle Vonnahme, Leonard Sailer; and sisters-in-law Lois Hamilton, Luella Grote, Marlita Grote, Irma Grote, Lorraine Vonnahme, Mary Sailer, and Doreen Grote.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am Friday, November 14, 2025 at St. Joseph Catholic Church,

A Knights of Columbus Rosary Service will take place at 4:30 pm Thursday, November 13, 2025 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in
Jefferson, Iowa. The family will visit with friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Thursday, November 13, 2025 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in
Jefferson, Iowa. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in
Jefferson, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the family to be used at their discretion.
