MR. JOHN HENRY HARRALSON, JR., March 30, 2022
John Henry Harralson, Jr. was born September 9, 1927 and died peacefully at the age of 94 surrounded by his beloved family. He was the only child of Agnes Simpson Harralson and Dr. John Henry Harralson, Sr. of Central City, Kentucky.
John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sarann Salsburg Harralson and four sons, John Henry Harralson, III, Dr. Thomas Giles Harralson, James Kincheloe Harralson and Benjamin Simpson Harralson.
John is also survived by three grandchildren, John Henry Harralson, IV and Hayden Proctor Harralson, the sons of John III and Cynthia Reid Harralson and Benjamin Webb Harralson, the son of Benjamin and Stacey Miller Harralson.
John graduated from Central City High School in 1945 and the University of Kentucky College of Business in 1951. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and a lifelong supporter of Kentucky Wildcats athletics. John never missed a home football game and was a fixture on the sideline with his press pass and camera.
In 1946, he took a leave of absence from UK and enlisted in the United States Army. John was assigned to the Corps of Engineers and shipped to Japan where his unit rebuilt the Misawa Air Base for use by occupation forces. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the Occupation of Japan Medal.
After graduating from UK, John accepted employment with Southern Bell Telephone Company. He held various executive real estate and public relations positions until his retirement from BellSouth in 1989.
John then purchased "The Voice of St. Matthews" newspaper, renamed it "The Voice-Tribune" and was publisher and executive editor for many years. Being a people person with a natural gift for conversation and names, John found his true calling as a newspaperman.
He became an icon of the Louisville social scene by photographing dignitaries and guests at sporting events, galas and business openings. At any important event, John would be present in his tuxedo, camera in hand and surrounded by people hoping to appear in the next issue. When the paper was sold, John continued working as a photographer well beyond his 90th birthday.
He served as Mayor of Brownsboro Village, Chairman of the Jefferson County League of Cities and on numerous boards and committees. He was a leader in the successful initiative to merge the City of Louisville and Jefferson County governments and active in Republican politics.
John was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Louisville Boat Club, Pendennis Club, Rotary Club, The Society of Colonial Wars in Kentucky and many professional associations and groups.
Visitation will be Sunday, April 10 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Pearson Funeral Home, 149 Breckenridge Lane, Louisville, KY 40207. A graveside service and burial at Cave Hill Cemetery will take place Monday, April 11 at 11:00 am. Attendees are to gather inside the Broadway entrance.
