John Hempstead Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Reuland & Turnbough Funeral Directors - Lake Forest on Aug. 19, 2024.
John "Jack" Bailey Hempstead III, age 78, of Lake Forest, Illinois passed away peacefully on August 14, 2024 surrounded by his family.
He was born August 29, 1945 in Alexandria, Virginia to John B. Hempstead & Dorothy Witt Hempstead. Jack served his county in the United States Marines Corps, both in Vietnam and Marine Headquarters in Quantico, Virginia. Jack received his Bachelor of Business Administration at Fairleigh Dickinson University and an MBA at Lake Forest Graduate School of Management.
As a child, he summered in Highland Lakes, New Jersey at his grandparents' cabin where he developed an insatiable love of fishing. A family transfer to Denver, Colorado solidified his love of the outdoors. He loved animals in the wild, pets in the home and a hawk he rescued and nursed back to health. Many years later after a successful career in Computer Software, he lived the dream by becoming a National Park Ranger. Packing up his convertible Corvette, he made the journey to Alaska for his first post at the Mendenhall Glacier. Jack lived on the edge, loving to take risks. He became a private pilot to get to fishing holes faster. Most of all he loved his family, his faith and going on fishing trips with his sons and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Suzie; his sons Jack IV, Christopher, Adam Chandler; and 2 adorable grandchildren Christopher and Sloane. He was the older brother of Gary Paul (Barbara) Hempstead and uncle to Joe and Nick.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 from 6-8 PM in the Stuart Room of the Gorton Center, 400 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest, Illinois 60045. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 10 AM at the Church of St. Mary, 175 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest, Illinois. The Mass will be livestreamed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPKGTe-umwQ. Interment will follow the Mass at Fort Sheridan National Cemetery.

I met Jack as a classmate when we both were working through the two year MBA Program at Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. While those were two very strenuous years balancing family, school, and work, I think we both leaned on each other to make it through that program. Those were two of the most fulfilling years of my life, and Jack was a large part of it. I still remember our goal for each class...to make sure our Final Presentation was an example for the students behind us. We sure made that happen...got to teach our fellow students to "give 'em the razzle dazzle" and to "sell the Sizzle!" I will very much miss knowing that Jack is around. Suzie and family, please know that Jack made a tremendous impression on me and our family. Thanks for sharing him with our LFGSM Group on all of those Saturdays and weeknights getting projects ready. Jack, hope they have some corvettes for you to ride while we wait to meet again.
